The backstory adds more depth to his character and pretty smart on the author to throw it in chapter two as justification/defense for him being "too soft". Still I do question overall if he didn't go from one extreme to the other. Like it's kinda a problem when you can't get one of your employees to do their job several days past schedule and another subordinate has to step in to keep them in line.
