He wants to joint the high caste... but he didn't say he would abandon his old friend. He'll hang out with both groups supposedly.

Seems kind of stupid... but I do get what he's feeling. I felt like that when I entered high school before too. Only difference is he actually got friends and STILL complaining about it.

He might not drop them directly like the other guy did, but seeing how obsessed he is with status you can expect him to ditch them as soon as they threaten his image. They're fair weather friends basically. Then again that's how most relationships are. It's not like they were shown to be sworn brothers or anything. They're just schoolmates hanging out because of their similar circumstances.
