Just because you provide something for free does not excuse you from criticism for childish behavior. It's possible to be critical of the way something is given to you separate from its contents.

The previous TL's notes were debatable in the beginning, but some of it later devolved into immature quips that were simply retaliatory rather than substantive. In my opinion, littering pages with pointless phrases like "your mom" deserves a call-out. There's no need to deface the original author's work like that.

Honestly, if it had just stuck to normal, polite criticism, I wouldn’t have been as pissed as I am about it. You and I both know it wasn’t though, because at least a good seventy-five percent of the comments criticising it were just insulting the guy the chapter before it even got that excessive. When someone puts in the effort, gives people something with absolutely no expectations of anything in return, and immediately gets cursed out and insulted for it, is it really so shocking for them to get petty back?

Like again, I also didn’t like the notes, but it really wasn’t that big a deal to ignore and read around them, because I liked the manga, and until this chapter, nobody else was doing them. Hell, if the last guy hadn’t done those chapters, I’m pretty damn sure we wouldn’t have this one either. And I need to make this extremely, perfectly clear, this is nothing against a0n2. They’re awesome for doing this, and the higher quality is damn well appreciated, but apart from them, nobody else was doing anything.

And I understand what you’re saying about defacing the original authors work to an extent, but let’s be real, we’re reading their work for free on the internet. We aren’t exactly supporting them here or respecting their wishes here. I couldn’t really tell if it’s actually possible to purchase the series online properly, but if it is, are you? Or if it isn’t, will you when it is? Because if you aren’t/won’t, none of us have any moral high ground to stand on when it comes to the original mangaka’s wishes.

Anyway, look, my main point at the end of the day is that constructive criticism is fine, there’s nothing wrong there, but if you’re just gonna sling petty insults at someone for putting in the effort to help us all out with no expectation of repayment, you’d better damn well be ready to put in the same work they did.

I agree that a lot of the initial criticism was unnecessarily harsh. I replied to your post because it was originally worded in a way that made it sound that all criticism was done by "entitled brats" (although you've since edited it, so that's water under the bridge).

Still, it's hard to sympathize with somebody "being petty back" when all it did was arguably invite more criticism. It's one thing to put notes in-between panels, but it's another thing to put them inside speech bubbles. While people were advising others to just ignore the notes, the TL went and objectively made the notes harder to ignore out of spite. I know it sucks for them to simply roll over and be lambasted for their work, but they potentially made the reading experience worse for people who initially had no complaints; I feel that actions done in bad faith like this make defenses such as "it's free" and "nobody else is translating" less valid.

And yes, scanlation as a whole is a morally gray area. Perhaps all arguments about moral high ground here are indeed moot, but I still can't deny that using someone else's manga as grounds to lash back at people's criticism, constructive or not, leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

In the end, there's a new translator, and this issue is now in the past. I'm going back to reading rather than commenting.

In the first two chapters the criticism was for the most part constructive, a few rude people but even they were mostly called out for it. And if the notes had stayed at that level it probably would have been fine. But when the scanlator doubles down and then doubles down again by putting "your mom" in a bunch of speech bubbles? Of course that's all anyone will talk about, and of course we're well past the point of constructive criticism then.
I'd say don't get pissed on the scanlator's behalf when they're clearly inviting these reactions.

Anyway, thanks to a0n2 for this chapter, it was very pleasant to read without the TL distractions and just a funny chapter in general.
