while sad it's also good that he's not just going to join the first kingdom he arrives in and befriend the royal family, create a relationship with the princess etc. it's been done to much, he needs to build his own kingdom from the group up.

While this is specifically intended to show the new people as ruthless and cruel(I'm not arguing against that), are we forgetting that all of those creatures were going to kill the MC until he magically lobotomized them? If the story can avoid making everything completely black and white morally, which is pretty unlikely in this genre, I'd find it far more interesting.

the goblins were hostile at first and only got friendly with the MC when he "tamed" them.
I don't know if they are aggressive against other races in general or if they got that way from being hunted down.
But if it is the case of them being a hostile race then is it really that strange for the army to try and wipe them out when they find them? (looking at goblin slayer)

it's true, this is all down to kill or be killed so technically there is no reason to be sympathizing. But it's important to keep in mind what transpired between mc and the demons. He lived with them and they helped him. True enough they tried to kill him at first but that doesn't mean he's going to ignore that they're helping him now, even if it's under the influence of his power. So what that means is the reason they stayed back to protect him instead of running to save themselves is because of his unfair power(page 17 seemed particularly important at demonstrating this). He likely feels responsible for unfairly taking away their will and mixed that in with potential stockholm syndrome/the inability to deal with the weird situation he's in, his reaction to their massacre isn't inappropriate. I doubt I'd ever read the LN but I'm guessing it would give more of his inner thoughts on this to make us better understand what he's feeling.
