So, that's actually more like $70 for a room with meals, and the compensation was more like $1,500. That's still a lot, but nowhere near the inflation you're thinking of.
Plus, he's still thinking in terms of an MMO economy, which is always super-inflated by the players. So, he was comparing the prices to normal MMO prices, which is cheap in comparison. There are literally times where NPCs sell items for 5 gold that have player marketplace prices of over 1000, just because the players can't be bothered to actually learn where the NPC is and travel there, which causes heavy inflation.
