As far as I can tell, no you don't need to do any combat to level production skills in Mobius. Its USEFUL to do combat as well (a character's stats appear to rely on what skills you have and the rank they are at. Someone who focuses entirely on one skill will master that skill faster....but a person who spends the time to master every skill becomes orders of magnitude more powerful. As he will show off at some point if you master one spell type, say fire spells, every rank the fire spell goes up increases its damage. But if you get all four kinds of spells to the same rank you will do MORE damage with that fire spell then just mastering fire because every skill boosts your stats.

So her assassin skills presumably buffed her dex pretty high which will further help her with blacksmithing, which will also raise her dex and strength to make her have yet higher stats. Its also one of like 3 different reasons that Second is a unstoppable badass in this world, players already realized this and anyone who aimed to compete with him for #1 had to similarly master EVERY skill or at least all the ones that boosted stats for their chosen challenging angle. (The other two reasons being his knowledge of HOW to get every skill some of which are national secrets in this world that players in the past had to complete quests to learn how to unlock the skills. And then his absurd skill level that let him find the best routes to use skills in to fight other people with the same skills, things that haven't advanced as far since this world is years behind the the game world he played in. So 1. Higher stats. 2. Game Knowledge 3. Skill. Could honestly put 4. Ungodly luck, as well because he has 2-3 things that probably make him entirely insurmountable as well eventually.)
