I think it's more of a set up chapter. The problem is that the author resolved the main pair's relationship too well in the first arc, which would work as a self contained story like you've talked about. The best we can get with them now is miniarcs (eg, the youtube celebrity or vacation arcs) or forced drama. Their job is to sit at a cubicle, so it's not like we can see them cooperating for anything interesting.

Some elements (skeptical mom showing up out of nowhere, Li Wenjing discipline, Lu Meihe job offer, etc) are introduced so that there can be an arc between them again. Given the cover art, the arc may culminate Lu Meihe marrying Li Wenjing when she gets back.

In between that we get some jokes that are references to earlier parts of the story. Maybe this is because the marriage arc is supposed to be a "serious" arc, so the author doesn't want to make the mom or cobra mentor too zany. Throwing in a few callback jokes fills the void.

I am still liking this series, but series like this often go off the rails around chapter 100 and start getting boring. It sounds like it may already be there for you. Others of us are still liking it, but most important characters are paired up at this point. I wouldn't mind it if, post marriage, the story ended and we got a new series from this this author.

Though who actually is the author? It just says "Lily Club", which supposedly is internally produced yuri bilibili comics. Is the artist the real author? ... Hang on, it says this series is "completed" on manga dex. Maybe it really ends with them getting married. And there's this other series by the artist:

Rookie cop and a genius thief - two outcasts from opposite worlds are forced to team up to catch the criminal mastermind.
One’s a hot-headed rookie shunned by her precinct. The other’s a brilliant thief ostracized by her peers. Thrown together against their will, they soon realize… The person they’re chasing might not be as dangerous as the reflection staring back at them.

When the long arm of justice meets a shapeshifting trickster, this mission starts to spiral into something no one expected…

- Heartbeat Alert Pursuit Order

I don't think this has an English translation, but maybe we have something to look forward to if someone eventually picks it up.

Kalata is both the author and artist. Lily Club is the publisher but since Mangadex doesn't have a section for the publisher they often get listed under the author slot for whatever reason.

Also L1v's group recently picked up the authors other series

Great news and info, thank you.

That's what I mean though, I think they are recycling it due to plot reasons. Specifically that Li Wenjing's mom and the mentor are "serious" characters are meant to inspire character growth, culminating in the marriage. Those characters got almost the whole focus this chapter. The jokes we get are references to earlier events, like to how the whole story got started due to them meeting in a bathroom stall, because that takes no additional setup.

Usually the humor in this series comes from some type of conflict, which often comes from a character's unresolved need or unresolved emotional issue, leading to over the top hijinks between the characters. At the end they overcome it and grow as a person.

This is hard for the main pair at this point, because they are so self actualized already now. The other characters could generate comparatively more jokes than the main pair, but now they are doing well too. The only one with deeply unresolved emotional issues that comes to mind is Li Wenjing's brother, who still doesn't value himself or his happiness enough.
