They seem to know near to nothing about dragons, then the girl he loves is sacrificed and lives with something he doesnt know anything about, of course that hits him ^^ the duel was dumb, but that he does not just take it and does nothing is understandable, better safe than sorry. If he study and follow that path ect in the end he may be wrong, but then he at least knows that she is happy, while if he doesnt do anything there is always the possibility that she was manipulated and isnt happy ^^
