Basically it feels like it's showing the ultimate ending reflecting a certain real place right now.
One dumbass get in charge, replace any dissenters and so in the end you have a country of cultists/asskissers who just try to dance around the stupid king while constantly denies responsibilities over how the country is going to shit because of them, even if it will basically kill them all down the line (i.e. Greed coming for revenge if Eliana is even hurt in this case)

@Siikalahna: "her country" is in shamble and need resources, and she doesn't know any other country to contact them. Lastly she is just one of those saint type who believe in good human nature, even though she's been betrayed/exploited because of it. Then again her looks + personality is what made Greed fell for her so eh.

@Siikalahna as WhimsiCat said she needs to form a diplomatic relation with that country to support her own. now that she knows its impossible and had received a "warm" welcome. she now had a valid casus belli for greed to fucking raze that shitty country to ground

For the people who dont understand it (and people like siikalahna who should just go away or better destroy there PC if flaming is all they can do):
Threnvale is the only country with a tiny chance of success to get accepted as a Kingdom and secure supplies so that their kingdom can survive.

If she gets through to the king, then there is still a chance to correct things. Maybe the current headmagician gets hanged or otherwise executed. Because in such a world most of the time such actions without official consent from the king is treason. She is there in a diplomatic mission and harming her in any way is like many people did realize a declaration of war. A head magician (most likely) doesnt have the right to decide such actions, because if that attack is known, then it will reflect poorly on the own country.
But to have all these cards to play, she needs to reach the capital or they can claim that it never happened.

All possibilities and the current situation considered Chris did the right decision. It is risky but it is better than the other options. If they would do what you all shortsighted people want with Lord Greed destroying the country would just turn ALL other humans and countries into enemies.

So attacking an acting diplomat of another state just because they are 'suspicious' is kind of an enormous political faux pas.

To resolve a situation like this, either the guilty country would need to make some enormous concessions that Greed's country would accept as recompense or Greed's country would need to go to war to show it's unacceptable to attack their diplomats.
