But he's not awful at communicating, he could participate in events normally with no problem, and there's no cliched "popular girl fell in love" or "I fell in love with popular girl". So it's basically just a simple and plain story of the guy's life as a highschooler (with all the baggage that comes with being in puberty).

Yes it's got a bit of a standard plot and probably popular girl will end up with him, BUT the whole premise is the MC is ACTUALLY a loner, not bad at communication particularly, and fairly normal overall and that's a major plot point and it isn't nearly as poorly done as most HS romances since it's well written and romance isn't the main focus early on - relationships in general are.

First several volumes of Makeine are right up your alley. V6 onward might not be so much so, but they're the consequence of those first five.
