No depression this time!
Other than the aftereffects of the slap I guess

@cillbosby No depression? Locking herself in the room not wanting to meet someone she never met before is so damn real that it makes me so uncomfortable right now. I'm pretty sure the author went through all this him/herself before, or at least know someone that is/was like this in their lives.

I hope that Neeko does end up getting a cat. I say that because having a pet does help lower stress and anxiety. Just petting them helps you calm your body down.

I know the whole point of the manga is about a NEET young woman but part of me wants to see her be at least a little free from anxiety + depression. Yeah, she will still have some of the problems of being a NEET. But.... /cat/.

We're expected to feel bad for the protagonist, with her struggle to acclimate to society and learn basic life skills - but I can't just ignore the fact that she's built like a supermodel, she's got kind and supportive parents who love her unconditionally, and lives in a nice house with her own room, and internet access. She's got life on easy mode...

That was quite the gratuitous shot in the first panel.

Neeko seems to be getting better though despite how she feels otherwise.

@daichinobakudan while her character is definitely designed that way to up the cuteness factor and draw in readers, I don't think the other factors are that bad.

There are plenty of people in real life who seem to have everything handed to them, yet still struggle with self esteem, motivation, and depression.

Having the positive external factors help, but your life doesn't have to go the route of Emergence in order to end up feeling like a piece of shit about yourself.

@daichinnobakudan plenty of people still struggle with anxiety and depression despite having good looks and a supportive family, especially in Japan.

Japan is not as advanced as other countries when it comes to mental wellness. Topics like anxiety and depression are scorned and many Japanese don't seek help because it's considered taboo by Japanese society as a whole. It's clear Neeko struggles with anxiety but can't express it to her family, who think the solution to the problem is just for her to find employment.

It's played for laughs in the story but it's a real issue in Japan.

@TheMagicToaster @dachinobakudan There's also the issues of alcoholism and many drug abuse issues that Japan has to deal with but is barely brought into light- hard subjects to deal with.

Sousuke punished mom for slapping Neeko.

That one resonates strongly.
