While not ecchi, you just reminded me of Terra Formars back in the day, where I was really interested in the anime, but dropped it less than 5 minutes into the first episode because the way they censored the gore was to literally slap a black box over 3/4s of the screen.

Though, I think they did the same to later seasons of To Love-Ru Darkness, as well, but I can't confirm; by that time, I'd just given up watching ecchi anime altogether because of how bad the censorship was getting.

I remember watching both of those, and yes, they were both censored to hell with ugly black shit across the screen. Shame, because I thought To Love-Ru Darkness was a masterpiece compared to the slapstick ecchi in previous seasons. That one actually had plot and a real story.

I think I remember the original release versions also having stupid censorship to get people to buy the uncensored volumes later on. I know, it's stupid to censor bikini shots but Japan is weird like that.

In practice however, Anime BD releases don't get much attention since streaming took over, so if Crunchy or whatever's release is censored you might be boned. Totally does not apply to TLR Darkness tho, I still have it all with crispy hand-made fansubs in all its Blu-Ray glory.

Same can be said for us here with manga, many fan-TL won't get updated with uncensored volume releases.

I’ll never understand censoring a bikini of all things, it’s not like the infamous black bars that actually make sense to a degree.

The funny thing is that they actually make scenes look a lot more risqué than they would otherwise be. lol
