He was making progress in the common sense department and soon as he get to a new town, he reverts back into the "This is just common, anyone can do it" mode.

If you've ever done gardening at all, pruning is one of the most important things you can do. You want to control how far it goes, have a specific point where you don't want it go past. And if they've been doing this for a long time and yet the forest is still right outside the town, it means that 1) it works. 2) the train newbies. 3) they are harvesting that "infinite wood". So yeah, from my end it's pretty brilliant idea.
edit: Hmm, gotta make a quick edit....I didn't read the whole chapter before my comment.....the more I read, I'll actually have to ask if maybe you too
@DragonkingKyo didn't read the chapter before commenting. They clearly explained why it's not a dumb idea and really emphasize what I said about the need of pruning....but it seems that it's not working (there goes my first point) and that they created more product than there is demand for it (and there goes any benefit from the third, embarrassing). Lesson learned, finish reading first....comment after.
