Nah, it was the rest of the sentence: "-before I kill you!"

I bet it's that he gets excited at the prospect of imminent death, which causes his HP to skyrocket to survive any otherwise fatal blow.

EDIT: So I looked up the real author he's based on, and found this bit from his wiki:

At the time, there was a lot of speculation about the incident, with theories of forced suicide by Tomie. Keikichi Nakahata, a kimono merchant who frequented the young Tsushima family, was shown the scene of the water ingress by a detective from the Mitaka police station. He speculated that "Dazai was asked to die, and he simply agreed, but just before his death, he suddenly felt an obsession with life".

So that's the conceit of the manga right there. He keeps looking to die, and every time he ACTUALLY comes close to death, he becomes obsessed with living, which triggers a massive stat boost that allows him to survive. But it's so momentary that he doesn't even realize his true feelings about life and death.
