This may be the case in your country, but in Japan giving gifts that are practical is the norm. For example, a common gift in japan is a towel. Yes, just a towel. It not only symbolizes the threads weaving together of relationships, but it's also simply quite practical and useful (just don't give hand-towels to your boss, because they have an additional connotation of "work hard" or "do your best" that isn't appropriate). The fact that it's the high-end stuff, as well, shows even more thoughtfulness than normal.
