Hot damn 😭Jesus H Christ I've never seen something so mistranslated in my life. You fucking suck, dude.
That’s too harsh, come on. I know you have the right - kind of - to criticize, given your proven experience, but that’s one more reason to provide insightful comments and tips, not just…this.Jesus H Christ I've never seen something so mistranslated in my life. You fucking suck, dude.
I think it's completely fair. For many groups, seeing an ML snipe go up is already exhausting enough as it is, even before you take into account the effort they've been doing to put out good translations and the knowledge that a significant amount of the MD audience aren't going to bother critically evaluating the translation and just want something up asap. It's not particularly fair to then ask a group member to also spend the effort seriously critiquing a translation that isn't theirs, especially when the vast majority of ML uploaders won't even bother to look at the comments, let alone actually give a damn about negative feedback when it costs them so little effort to get the clout. That’s too harsh, come on. In a lot of cases, the problem is: what effort? Why thank someone for sniping and trying to dampen good translations? This case is a bit more nuanced because the guy is going around asking for feedback, but there's plenty of times when I don't want to go 'cool thank you for contributing to running off a good group'With that out of the way, a “thanks you” for the efforts is always a must!
I'm quite new to this place, would you explain what you mean with "ML snipe" or in short, what's the issue being discussed here?I think it's completely fair. Similarly,

Is it, though? MTL would have been better than this. That’s too harsh, come on. I know you have the right - kind of - to criticize, given your proven experience, but that’s one more reason to provide insightful comments and tips, not just…this.

However, it’s true that to honor the original work you should have paid a bit more attention to typesetting and cleanup. Mistranslations are not that big of a problem so long as you go back and fix them as soon as they are spotted, but I am a bit more concerned about the overall structure you gave to dialogues. They come out with a sort of “flat tone”, the best way I can put it into words is that the level of language I am expecting from such smart-ish characters is not reflected by your choice of words. Maybe I am nitpicking here, but sometimes, from the drawings alone, I think the original Japanese expressions were meant to be deeper, or more profound than what got through with your phrasing.
And, another important thing, I understood that this is work you had “lying around”, and other translations are out there, but I truly suggest you start uploading new chapters from where the series was left off.
There are two things:I'm quite new to this place, would you explain what you mean with "ML snipe" or in short, what's the issue being discussed here?
Thanks
Thank you so much for the explanation, keeping this in mind changes my perspective on the translations now. There are two things:
- a 'snipe' is someone dropping in their own translation of a work that's already in progress without starting over from chapter 1. In the best scenario, this is done when a group has announced they're dropping a series and aren't going to work on it anymore and someone else picks it up. At its worst, it's someone aggressively trying to 'take over' a series from another group or piggyback off of their work, whether it's because the existing group is slow or idk whatever weird politics. Sniping a series that has gone truly idle usually is kind of whatever, but a) 2 months isn't that idle and b) if you're going to do it you should ideally not skip chapters.
- ML / machine learning / AI translations. These are usually pretty low effort and/or very inaccurate, usually aren't proofread, and usually are badly typeset. However, they're super easy to just make and throw out there - so they tend to get used a lot in snipes, and free readers generally only care about 'fast' rather than 'good' or 'accurate' so they just flock to the new chapters and the people doing more careful translations get to wonder why they bother.
I know you shoot my dog, but thank you for the effort officer! With that out of the way, a “thanks you” for the efforts is always a must!
