I get the Scalation community have high standards and there are many of us very grateful for that. However the way new translators are berated and ridiculed for poor translations on their first attempts is partly why so many people are fearful of getting involved. Everyone was new to something once and really think people could be a little bit more supportive in encouraging them to develop their skills rather than tearing them a new one just for having a go.

That said @Shantsu this is a much better translation so thanks and yes please do continue!
They should be fearful. If you don't speak either language natively, you've got no business even trying in the first place. It just means you take attention away from real translations, and you forever taint aggregator sites with your garbage. They don't exactly review translations and update when a better one comes along.

If you're so desperate to try machine translating from a language you don't speak to your distant second or third language, how about your just do it for yourself and stop shitting up things for everyone else? Or hell, why not just do a chapter that's already been done and avoid being the default option for people scrolling through the manga for the first time? This is my literal first translation from back in the days when I had to keep tabs open just to reference the hiragana and katakana, and when I didn't know about は and を in written text. Compare and contrast with the garbage the guy put out and tell me we should be "supportive".

Fine, not everyone's as amazing as me. But come on. Don't encourage him for failing to do even the barest of minimums here.

The danger with this thinking is you drive potential talent away and ultimately end up relying on a very small pool of translators meaning many titles that could, just don't get any attention at all. You're right, you're clearly talented and good at what you do and I'm not saying we should accept poor work. I'm just saying the vitriol directed at newcomers having a go is unnecessarily harsh when actually helping them to learn from it and do better next time means a few will inevitably develop into better translators. To draw a parallel, I was totally crap the first time I tried doing what I do with my first job but with support and encouragement I'm now relatively senior helping new and upcoming talent myself.

With quality like this, we should drive them away. There's no "improvement" to be made when you literally don't speak any of the languages involved, and just rely on a machine to do all the work for you. You're trying to imagine these people are just honest, hardworking newbies who want to put out the best possible material, but oh shucks, wouldn't you know it, they just didn't do so good. But they're not. If they cared about quality, they'd translate to their first language- If they cared about improving, they'd translate everything by hand- and if they cared about the reader, they'd practice with old, already-released chapters. And if you're so thoughtless you didn't think about any of the above, then clearly all you care about is yourself.

I myself spent literal years just trying to watch anime without subs and translating porn doujins for my own personal use. I didn't even consider scanlation until I didn't need subtitles anymore, and I saw a simple, SOL series that I desperately wanted to read more of. Only once I finally got a grip on the basics of the written part of the language did I start including machine tools to identify text, and suggest lines.

Let me put it a whole different way. Forget about the readers, the aggregators, decency, etc.

You say we rely on a small number of translators to do series. This may or may not be a problem. But consider this:

There are hundreds, if not thousands of translators groups out there. Some of them inevitably get donations for their work. I won't pretend to know precisely how much is donated in total, but this website gets almost 50 Million unique visitors every month. If even .1% donated a single dollar to a group in that period of time, that's $500,000 monthly.

With that in mind, what do you think would get us more manga: An army of completely illiterate morons, or a small group of well-paid translators? If this were spread out between, say... 100 highly-specialized, competent groups, do you think they might be motivated to take this up as a full-time job instead of doing the odd chapter here and there?

I don't think it needs to be said, but obviously fewer groups being around won't suddenly concentrate donations on to the survivors, and we don't personally control how many groups are around. But at the same time, fewer people being around doesn't exactly equate to less work getting done. Especially when the vast majority are putting this kind of stuff out and failing to do the job in the first place while spoiling it for anyone that would otherwise be willing and able to.

I don't want to offend the other translator, but this one is a hundred times better

Thanks for the TL; definitely better than the MTL …
However, feels like a waste to have two people redundantly working on the same thing; maybe if you contact that other uploaded you two could work together and lighten each others load?

Finally someone posted something readable. There's like 3 different people updating chapters using broken MTL, I guess it fits the quality of this manga. Trash manga attracts trash translations

How this terrible excuse for a manga gets so much attention while so many gems sit completely untouched is beyond me. In my decade of wasting my life away on this stupid hobby, I have never seen a series be picked up and dropped by so many people in such little time (admittedly, it's all been really terrible machine translation, but all the same).
Anyway; please stop.

You know this whole manga might be a bit trashy, but at least I can enjoy it more the "Dou ka Ore wo Houtte Oitekure". In Dou ka... The character constantly talks about being a lone wolf and the manga tries so hard to be oregairu that It felt just tiring. In this one here I can actually get why the character is the way he is and he still likeable for me, because he still tries to do nice things. I just wanted to say it, because it bothered me. And no I didn't finish the other one, so It could get better but the manga just lost me

I mean... Isn't it better to practice on trash and old manga instead of those hidden gems? Wouldn't readers be even more upset at a poor translation there?

Maybe it's my fault for encouraging other to pick it up, maybe this manga should just be laid dormant. However, while I did use MTL for the majority of my attempts, I also had the WN open to double-check my work. Shantsu at least has knowledge of Japanese unlike me, perhaps I should delete my translations and let him correct my mistakes? Sorry you feel that way, man.

It's "better" to practice alone, then try with an already-done chapter. At least then the aggregators won't pick up your practice run. Why didn't you start trying once you actually spoke some kind of Japanese? As it stands, you probably don't even know that Japanese has implicit subjects, for example. Nobody expects you to be fluent, but you should at least be able to understand enough of the languages to know when things have gone horribly wrong.

You may not know what 15467x88640 is, but if you know literally anything about multiplication, you know the answer isn't going to be 4. And if you ever got that out of your calculator, you'd know something went HORRIBLY WRONG and you'd avoid giving the obviously-incorrect answer.

Hence the reason I was using the WN as a means to double-check my work, your previous comments seem to indicate that you've read it so I believe that you're familiar with the dialogue.

However, much like one of your comments in one of the previous translations, I also had a tab open with a Japanese dictionary to reference unknown characters.

Of course I know that my work would fall short to someone who knows what they were doing, but it's still obvious to tell when a translation is wrong.

All I'm basically saying is, how can an inexperienced person work an entry level job, when the job requires years of experience?

We all have to start somewhere, and by attempting TLs, one can receive feedback from others. You, yourself even offer to help with some parts I had trouble with, and I thank you for that.

This story got summarized on Youtube. The comments went into great detail with the spoilers.

No no. I had the tab open because I didn't recognize the characters; You had the tab open because you didn't recognize the words: We are not the same. I started off my first translation already knowing the structure of the language, and being able to understand 80% of what was being said in standard dialect. I started translating nearly two years ago; I started learning in 2007.

Translation isn't an entry-level job. Never has been. I spent literal years figuring out the language through anime and regular studying before I even thought to translate anything. And even then, it was doing hentai doujin in private, and it was a slog. Only a year or two later did I finally put out my first chapter after joining a group. It was only months into that that I finally became what I might call "competent" at the task and felt confident enough to change the title of that series to what it is now (It is, for the record, a perfect, 1-to-1 translation now).

To boot it doesn't look like you speak either language as a first, so you've made the job even harder still.

You can start by reading a book on the basics of the language. Though I respect that you're willing to accept criticism instead of doubling down on the shit you put out. You've got the right attitude, if nothing else; Let's work on your ability next.

You should have standards. This bullshit is how we get morons thinking that they can fuck up as hard as they like, or that the garbage they put out is fine. But the fact is, the first upload gets caught by aggregators. The more comfortable they feel uploading shit, the more often most readers will get garbage.
yea, having no standards is how we get right dark

I see, thank you for correcting me.

I'm fluent in English as my third language but i suppose my writing skill are lacking.

Thank you, honestly I've been considering learning Japanese after TL-ing. You have a way of writing that makes you sound grandiose but I see that you're just very critical of proper translations.

Nonetheless, I suppose my attempts are poorly made due to my experience, should I take them down for someone, such as yourself to give it a better go?

I did say before that I only planned to translate this series as a reader, but I guess I bit of more than I could chew.
