That's if, and only if, the manga is based on the web novel version. There's a light novel, so I'm going to go out on a limb and assume that the manga is based on that.

It's actually that the perceived underdog is the victim, and the perceived overdog (?) is the villain. And his ex is deliberately cultivating and using it.
