My guess for why he is such a low rank while his old party is mid rank when he seems pretty strong (hard to say if he is as good as or better than mid rank without a comparison at this point, but is certainly much stronger than a newbie) is either the guild had rank up tests and he felt he wasn't ready to attempt them (probably due to his party diminishing him) or the rank was based on offensive contributions to quests and the party didn't report his.
