@jonsmth yeah I agree, he paid too much for a promotion, but that is in hindsight. This is a nobility system where a high ranking noble literally forced a girl to place a bomb on her brothers mech and fully intended to kill him to save the honor of the prince. In an official duel he used a ton of illegal things and got away with it due to his rank.

Paying too much is a bit of a joke statement. When Mc can literally create anything he wants, you don't need to give a shit about money, especially if you just want to ensure your own life. Yes he had an idiotic amount of money and likely gave an idiotic amount of cash to the Duke (even if visuals make it appear he only gave a decent chunk of change and not the combined resources of an entire nation), but had he done any less he might be in a much worse situation. Whether or not it was too much is irrelevant when you consider that he places very little value in it due to his abilities, and he gave that money specifically because he knew it offered protection. If agent 47 was after your head and you knew it, you wouldn't gamble.

After all the Duke does say "you aren't my child" and pretty much downplays it for professionalism. He's doing this for a number of reasons. He isn't the wisest but once again it is relatively pragmatic. Angie gets picked on because Marie is scum, and the situation mucks itself up over and over. At the end of the day it was an impulse decision, but he is trying to get kicked out and live a peaceful life, so offloading as much cash as he can seems pragmatic. Had he not done so he'd be at risk of others finding out just how much he pocketed, which would lead to further actions.

Once again nobility and politics are a bit iffy. He wanted to get kicked out and beat up assholes, this was efficient and effective in theory, Marie for example fucks stuff up hard because she doesn't know the only reason in the end that the reverse harem or even normal romance is acceptable is because of the fact the protag had Saint powers. These dudes are the highest ranking in the nation, and as such shouldn't exactly share a single wife, complications with politics, heirs, location, houses, family, bloodline etc.

Tldr : arguing he spent too much money is stupid since he doesn't need money himself and can easily make more

@SunSun Yeah, he technically wanted to go the ordinary class to acquire a wife, but since, as a reincarnator, he knows how ridiculous that society is, he clearly didn't mind getting expelled (aside from losing the tea lessons from Master). If he didn't mind getting kicked out, it means it wasn't such a big deal. Noble titles are all nice and fancy, but how useful they are, is a different thing. At the end of the day, money and power are what matters. They also often go hand in hand with noble titles, which could be bought with money. In this series it shows exceptionally well because finding and claiming a new island pretty much automatically gives you a noble title, which in turn, mean a certain amount of taxes paid to the crown (a pretty clear circle). The title alone doesn't keep you fed, though, especially if you are a man with your wife sucking your coffers dry, like Leon's old man.

There's no way nobody would want to deal with Leon as long as he has both money and power. Nor would the crown want to let go of him. We don't actually know awfully lot of the central government. However, since you liked to talk about feudalism, it means the royals are weak. They would rather keep Leon than try to fight him and lose too much of their little power. Some duke or count might want to fight him, but only if they deem it's profitable, which they likely wouldn't. All in all Leon's expectations for the aftermath of the match were far too severe. Like you said, I guess it's because he feels responsible for his original family (which means his old man is totally miserable).

Also, as long as he has money and power, finding a nice wife shouldn't be too difficult. Why should he care if the wife is a noble or not? He in fact wants as little to do with the high society of the country as possible, so it makes zilch sense he would want to mainly phony prestige. If he married a commoner and the other nobles looked down on him, it should be perfect. They would leave him alone, aside from business deals.

Angelica has always lived a life of luxury. Nobody can say how well she would have coped with primitive conditions in the long run. Idealism and such tend to suffer in the face of hardships.

Somehow I had forgotten the stepmother practically murdering the children for money. It's a real concern, for sure. However, Zora doesn't have any real power, no fleet, no army. She can't really threaten Leon, unless she gets someone else to do the job. I wonder if she has the influence for that, since that someone else would need to risk a defeat. Leon can afford quite a bit of belligerence, like he showed in the match. Just for the record, when I said Leon could stop her, I didn't mean destroy her. I merely meant, whatever means of transportation she used, Leon could easily stop the ship from landing on his island, forcing her to turn back. As long as Leon hasn't got a wife, even in that country he's the highest power on his own island.

Well, his capability to pay was never in question. It's that overestimating the value of things, which was easy to do when you have tons of money, may make things different from what is expected of them. What he didn't take into account was that his own words, the way he presented himself, and his renown and value for the kingdom (he thinks himself as a mob character), affected the price of protection for his life and his family; he gave himself a discount without knowing it yet he still paid "full price", so to speak. But as you say, that's in hindsight - he shouldn't really be stingy when it comes to protecting his life and his family (although he only really used part of his winnings).

I'd say that he would have only been properly pardoned - no promotions - if the duke's son couldn't have made the comment, "that's an impressive amount". Furthermore, "court work is expensive", but the duke was given more than enough funds that he was even able to "convince" the more stubborn members of the court to promote the MC (duke's own agenda).

@Kaarme Except he didn't go pushing to be Anjelica's rep with the intent of getting expelled, he stated he just hates the capture targets. It wasn't till right before the match that he implies he's got a plan, and after the match that it hinges on him getting expelled to escape the marriage partner hell.

Noble titles are all nice and fancy, but how useful they are, is a different thing.

They are very, VERY useful, beyond a tax status for the kingdom, they are a form of protection. Having a noble title avails protection by the monarch granting you the title, in return for service and tithes (taxes). And as far as I can tell in the manga, it's also a recognition of ownership of land.

In this series it shows exceptionally well because finding and claiming a new island pretty much automatically gives you a noble title

No, finding land doesn't guarantee a title. The island he found was the scale of a baronetcy, which ISN'T a noble title; knighthood isn't nobility either for that matter. He received the title of Baron for conquering a dungeon, bringing back lostech, AND finding an island. And even his own family history, they weren't nobles until the island the found developed into the size of a barony, the monarch just recognized them as landlords/owners but NOT nobility.

The title alone doesn't keep you fed, though, especially if you are a man with your wife sucking your coffers dry, like Leon's old man.

This isn't in the manga, but IRL there are such things as non-landed nobles who since they don't have land, instead have a stipend from the monarch for living expenses, so in a way, yes having a title CAN keep you fed if a title's all you have.

However, since you liked to talk about feudalism, it means the royals are weak.

Peerage =/= feudalism, get that out of your head. And feudalism doesn't mean the "royals are weak", you go through history and there's plenty of strong monarchs and weak ones, that may or may not have a feudal system economically running in the background, the fuck kind of assumptions you're making...when the point of being a vassal was so you can be protected by your lord, and if he's a monarch then why the heck are you asking a "weak royal" to protect your sorry ass or give you land to work on? To put it in a modern perspective, is a president of a company weak for having department heads, managers, and supervisors. What about a head of state, is a head of state weak for appointing director of taxes, secretary of state, director of treasury, etc?

They would rather keep Leon than try to fight him and lose too much of their little power...

If that's the case why's Leon afraid of being executed? The more reasonable assumption is that Luxon and Arroganz isn't powerful enough to take on a military force by themselves, and that's also ignoring that they don't have to go after Leon directly, they can hold his family hostage to force him to give up Luxon and register it to the monarch, especially that broken ability to transmog one material into another. I checked the LN for this part, and it outright states that this is the only point that Leon can win against the prince and his 4 douchebags, before any of them have a chance to develop, implying that even with Arroganz's and Luxon's power, Leon would've lost if any of the 5 had had even 1 year to grow.

Like you said, I guess it's because he feels responsible for his original family (which means his old man is totally miserable).

Oh fucks sake, look filial piety has nothing to do with how your parents are doing emotionally, physically, or financially. Simply put, it's the idea that since your parents raised you, you help them, spend time with them, etc in return. And you can see that Barcus is only miserable when Zola is there, which the manga states isn't often.

Jilk, the heir to an Earl's household, also the foster brother of the crown prince, managed to Jenna, Leon's sister, to plant a bomb on Arroganz. And he got away with it. In the novel it was worse, he used a lackey to give Jenna the bomb, so the lackey could be used as an alibi and be protected by Jilk's title and status. If Leon married a commoner and didn't act according to his rank and status, even with Arroganz and Luxon, it's not going to end with just "business deals", AND again, they can fuck over his family instead. Just because you don't place value on family, doesn't mean other people and characters don't.

Angelica has always lived a life of luxury. Nobody can say how well she would have coped with primitive conditions in the long run. Idealism and such tend to suffer in the face of hardships.

The island he discovered has a hot springs bath that the girls were able to change into robes for, and there's the servants that Angelica brought with her that you see in Chapter 13. She's not roughing it, you're just not paying attention. And if they were roughing it, then it makes even more sense for Leon to go back to his father's territory, which makes your original statement and point null.

...However, Zora doesn't have any real power...

The setting of this world is literally where women hold the power. Chp 1, pg 33, "In this world, women hold the power! You'd know that just by looking at dad!" Else explain to me how Zora is able to get away with attempting to sell Leon off , and is involved with an organization who's sole purpose is to marry men and get them killed for money? And how such an organization even exists in the first place?

If Leon's actions or what not bug you that much, why not just stop reading? It didn't seem like you read it all that carefully in the first place.

And as far as I can tell in the manga, it's also a recognition of ownership of land.

They only protect the nobles to uphold the current social order (like if a noble and a commoner battle it out in the court of law, the noble wins in most cases). They do nothing to protect nobles from other nobles, let alone the royals. Commoners aren't Leon's enemies, the nobles are.

No, finding land doesn't guarantee a title.

It does, if the land is worth anything, that is, if the adventurer makes anything of it. If they don't, I could see some noble scumbag coming and stealing it for their own if they see value in it. Because the crown wants to taxes and the noblewomen want one more sucker to suck empty. Nobody's going to steal anything from Leon, though, unless they send a whole army.

Peerage =/= feudalism, get that out of your head

Get what out of my head? Feudalism was a primitive, highly inefficient form of government that the royals got rid of as soon as they grew strong enough to get rid of it. All countries with a strong king tried to go for an absolute monarchy (or other strong centralised government) as soon as they could to get rid of the inefficiency and thus become strong enough to satisfy ambitions. We don't know enough of the country in this work to even know what it is. The nobles with their islands seem to possess quite a lot of power, so it's possible it's basic feudalism. Magna Carta is quite an interesting historical thing considering this, as the British feudal noblemen actually could foresee the dim fate of feudalism in the long run and did what they could to remain more relevant.

it outright states that this is the only point that Leon can win against the prince and his 4 douchebags, before any of them have a chance to develop, implying that even with Arroganz's and Luxon's power, Leon would've lost if any of the 5 had had even 1 year to grow.

I seem to remember the game having such annoying difficulty that the sister didn't want to bother with it and instead had the brother grind through it, using cash items to boot. Saying the prince and his group of cronies would automatically be unbeatable in a year sounds like the total opposite to what the manga indicated.

If Leon married a commoner and didn't act according to his rank and status, even with Arroganz and Luxon, it's not going to end with just "business deals", AND again, they can fuck over his family instead. Just because you don't place value on family, doesn't mean other people and characters don't.

According to you, Zora could defend Leon's old family. I did give her too little credit, yes, so as rotten as she is, she's still good for something.

I have been saying all the time Leon should distance himself from his old family so that nobody would target them to get to him. Sure, you are right to a degree that Zora herself would try to do something if anyone did, but that also depends on how deeply involved Leon is. Though more importantly, as it is, anyone attacking his old home island would now also piss off the ducal Redgrave.

If Leon married a commoner and didn't act according to his rank and status, even with Arroganz and Luxon, it's not going to end with just "business deals", AND again, they can fuck over his family instead. Just because you don't place value on family, doesn't mean other people and characters don't.

Why exactly wouldn't it end with just business deals? Where's the profit in anything else? Nobles don't magically live well and maintain the luxurious lifestyle. They need lots and lots of income. If they can make good deals with Leon, it means income. If they cause trouble for him, it only means expenses and no income. They might even weaken themselves and cause another noble to target them.

In this world, women hold the power! You'd know that just by looking at dad

Only if you allow them to hold all the power. It seems very much like an average statement after we saw the school and other places. The prince & cohorts were toying with girls any way they wanted to. Leon was negotiating with men when he made the deal with Redgrave to protect his family. Leon's father has got no personal power, so he's utterly at his wife's mercy after getting married to that monster. Leon, however, is like the prince now: He can choose whom to marry. Who's going to force him and how? Even after marrying, he's the one still in control, unless he willingly lets go of the control.

I admit one thing, however: If he marries a noble wisely, we would have that noble's family's support as well for the time being. But if he marries unwisely, it would be the opposite and the new noble family could be his worst enemy (like Zora is his old man's worst enemy).

@Kaarme Feudalism is a good model when 90% are illiterate and easily manipulable.Absolute monarchy can fail too if you get a liu chan or 0/0/0 ruler.
Dont worry absolutism is the queen plan. You have the explanation in the novel later and why she empowered girl in this story.

@ApolloX1209 Well, it's an AI that seems to be capable of pretty much anything just by giving it normal ass rocks for materials. It'd be almost weirder if it doesn't end up in some sort of female looking android body at some point, considering the type of story this is.
