Honestly the whole slave thing is stupid. Japanese obsession with slavery is getting annoying for me.
If you can have a slavery magic BS, some Isekai also have magic contract that binds both sides as well. You can still have a guard that's not a slave and can be trusted enough. You can also employ a guard or two live-in 24/7 if needed.
The whole arguments about cost is also stupid af. You need someone skilled to be your bodyguard, and these people are less likely to be sold in slavery aside from criminals. A skilled slave probably would cost a shitton as well.
The way buying slaves is the default option in this world is kinda stupid. It would mean people would rather buy a slave rather than hiring services, making the economy heavily dependent on slave trading. Need a servant? Buy a slave. Need a laborer? Buy a slave. Need a builder? Buy a slave. The job market is literally fucked. An economy that relies on pure exploitation is both unsustainable and stagnant, as most of its population is stuck in lower stratum doing low-value work. Slave merchants also would be super powerful with real political power due to their wealth and profits.
I don't mind showing slavery in fantasy as even modern world still has it. Still, the way slavery is baked in society in most Isekai is lazy and badly thought-out.
