Honestly the whole slave thing is stupid. Japanese obsession with slavery is getting annoying for me.

If you can have a slavery magic BS, some Isekai also have magic contract that binds both sides as well. You can still have a guard that's not a slave and can be trusted enough. You can also employ a guard or two live-in 24/7 if needed.

The whole arguments about cost is also stupid af. You need someone skilled to be your bodyguard, and these people are less likely to be sold in slavery aside from criminals. A skilled slave probably would cost a shitton as well.

The way buying slaves is the default option in this world is kinda stupid. It would mean people would rather buy a slave rather than hiring services, making the economy heavily dependent on slave trading. Need a servant? Buy a slave. Need a laborer? Buy a slave. Need a builder? Buy a slave. The job market is literally fucked. An economy that relies on pure exploitation is both unsustainable and stagnant, as most of its population is stuck in lower stratum doing low-value work. Slave merchants also would be super powerful with real political power due to their wealth and profits.

I don't mind showing slavery in fantasy as even modern world still has it. Still, the way slavery is baked in society in most Isekai is lazy and badly thought-out.

Something I always wondered when I looked at MC's house with tall grass, I'm surprised that the Authors never insert an issue with these places like a fuck load of ticks or mosquitoes etc, as soon as I saw those tall grass I'm like man how are there NOT any ticks there etc :worry:
I guess no one wants to draw all that! :wooow: also pretty sure their editor would put a stop to it unless the main plot of the manga is some kind of insect kink

Then you need to reread my comments, never once claimed slavery as practiced here on Earth was a good thing, only that it still existed, just by many other names.

Oh yes, please explain what human rights Russian prisoners have, or the immigrants that were shipped off to cecot. Sure not everyone are being forced into chaingangs to dig ditches, but that doesn't mean mostly innocent people are being held against their will for crimes they didn't commit and for someone's profit.

And that is the biggest fallacy in your arguments. Slavery takes many forms and doesn't follow any strict rules. Most of all, at any point, those rules can change unless enforced by a higher power. An indentured servant is just a slave who hopes their master will follow words on a piece of paper, and not find an excuse to add more debt to their balence.
I know you didn't, I said what I said because I didn't understand what point you were trying to make when specifying that it existed in reality? Do you wish it was just shown differently in the manga?

It honestly depends on which conversation you posted about...

But think the original conversation started by someone asking why Japanese media are so hung up on slavery and child-like bodies. Then we ended up arguing about at what point indentured servitude stops being Slavery by another name.

Sigh, fucking manga authors and their boners for slavery. Like, there are so many other options in a world of magic.

Or a golem. Or guard dogs. Or some kind of magical ward.

A "This house is protected by basilisk, trespassers will be petrified." sign next to a statue.

Exactly! Hell, she has a magic book that lets her create things... oh wow, look, there is a recipe for a golem in the book. I can pay Asul to go get the components for me, and [Create] oh look, I have a golem guard. And because no one else has seen one, looks like everyone keeps away because what the fuck is this thing?

This is such a frustrating and sickening trope in manga. I'd hoped that it being a female MC that we'd escape the slavery thing. Maybe mangadex needs a "slavery" tag so I can tell which mangas to not even bother with.

She'll need to "level up" first as currently there's just a handful of recipes available?
Few potions and the one use magic crystals.

The issue is that The guard has a time setting where they actually have to go home etc because guarding is just a job meanwhile the slave can stay with the MC 24/7

Normal hired servants can live on site too you know

Oh, the magic lightning crystals would be wonderful, use the money she's making now to buy the resources needed to make hundreds of them. Make a show outside of town 'testing' them and gain the title of "Lightning Witch", all ostentatiously to promote her new lightning gem product where she goes in length about how deadly these gems are, how they can be used for self defense, and how they could vaporize a bandit or robber, making them the perfect tool for protecting one's self for women or even little girl. From then on she could carry a number of them on herself, openly displayed and within easy reach for 'protection'.

I like how everyone just came up with a better creative alternitive then resorting to a barbaric practice of owning a person like property. As well as the social and economics of what happens if that kind of system entails especally when people just normalize it for everything. Sadly its the type of thing they will mention once or twice after our MC gets the "goods" and never explore in details or the flaws of such a system. No matter the rules in place there is also loopholes to exploit.
I'd also like to add that she could try defending herself with her creations, like making poisons/bear spray/skin irritation/molotov potion and just throw it at those crooks, or make a glass spray bottle for some of the options listed, she'd have one hell of an ammo capacity. Since she lives in an unfamilar world, it is reasonable that someone isn't always going to watch over you always so why not take matters onto ones hands?

Ah. Just thought of something; she's pretending to be an alchemist right? Another solution would have been for her to make enhancement and defense potions, like a potion of Iron Skin to make herself immune to conventional weapons or a potion of Giant Strength so she'd be strong enough to punch through a stone wall (or bandit). Author could have had them as potions she could create but up until now couldn't afford the ingredients.

the fairy is probably cleaning them? or the author just doesn't want to deal with it

I get you, but so many isekai and fantasy want to hook on the "they're yours forever and thus can't betray you because magic"

If it was me giving someone a job so they can pay off their debts would be far easier to stomach if I needed such, but isekai gonna isekai I guess ..
though could still betray you
