When Kirishima was talking to his dad he seemed to be hearing his dad say 'make someone like you' as in 'make someone a bit of a masochist so they are similar to you' and Kodaka letting loose at the tournament probably made him think he'd found that someone and why he thought Kodaka would make a good buddy.

Thats a really interesting insight! My initial thoughts was in that piercing eyes scene he felt like they're peas in a pod as in both grandpas are gangster and thus naturally build differently from other kids. "Create" a friend is totally what Kirishima would do fr! Haha this is so fun

Ah, no, he actually saw Kodaka as a kindred spirit, not Yoshino. In the present day he told Tsubaki that he knew he wasn't worthy of Yoshino but went to see her because he was curious and the only way to see her was to sneak off because, like it says in this chapter, he's not a yakuza's grandkid.

Interesting! Is there a difference regarding uses of "like" in the raws?

Or, er, I'm not quite sure how to phrase it, but in French « comme » is used for the comparative "like" (create someone who is similar to you) and « aimer » is generally used for the verb "like" (make someone have positive feelings about you). But in English "like" is used for both. Is it the same word for both in Japanese as well?

Anyway, very excited to have real translations for this chapter, thank you as always! So excited to see where things are headed especially with everything being cyclical. (And the new volume cover is stunning.)

Hey, sorry for the late response, but yes, there are different Japanese words used here. When Kirishima's dad is talking to him he uses 'like/affinity for' (suki) and 'alike/similarity' (niteru) which Yoshino also uses in Chapter 30 when she tells Azami he resembles someone (that someone being Kirishima). So here, his dad says 'talk about stuff you like (suki) with people who are like (niteru) you'. The disconnect occurs because his dad says 'similar' meaning 'sharing hobbies' but Kirishima hears 'similar' and thinks it's something a little more-- namely 'violent and sadistic'.

This is also a callback to the discussions Yoshino and Kirishima have had previously at school and after the silent treatment when Kirishima says he had 'a plan to make a friend that went wrong'. That was clearly Kodaka, who he thought was similar to him (violent, a bit sadistic) but who failed to deliver when push came to shove.

This occurred to me too and I think it’s less about suki (‘like’ as in ‘have affectation for’) versus niteru (‘like’ as in ‘similar to’) and more about tsukuru (‘make’ as in ‘make friends’) that was instead interpreted as ‘make’ as in ‘create’?
