@Amarrez I think it's because they're so used to the setting being set in Europe ( I want to say medieval but I don't think that's accurate) in villainess stories.

To the translators: Thank you for your hard work!

@SakuraShower
Thank you for recognizing that! Typical settings for these things are basically a bastardized 17th or 18th century faux Western-Central Europe (yes, it is that vague; no, I can't pin-point the general setting for these things any better). And, yes, I agree: that is the most likely reason.

Anyone else alarmed that actions weren't immediately taken regarding the blatant mistreatment of a scholarship student by a regular (and thus very wealthy) student? I know this is Fiction-Land, but as a cynic, I found this very troubling.

Lol, the school system and prince named Katsuragi setting reminds me of Kenkyo, Kenjitsu o Motto ni Ikite Orimasu.
I'm sure there must be some other novels and manga with the same school system and background setting but I have yet to encounter them.

Yup, I knew it.
Though I thought it wasn't quite right, because the villainess isn't someone from another world, but still acts differently than her otome game version supposedly did.
But we all know the reason the little fucker is being a little fucker is because the "villainess" can charm all the male leads, without having to do much. So she "gets in the way." It's probably just because the main heroine is just a doormat, but the little fucker wants the doormat to end with someone. Maybe so that she can snatch one of the other male leads for herself. If that's what she is trying to do, she is wonderfully shooting herself in the foot, so I hope that's the case :)

Wow, I don’t know if I regret reading those spoilers or not. I’m trying to reconcile the plot I thought I was going to get and the one that’s apparently coming and nothing’s connecting??? Like what? Why are the characters like this? Author please.

I’ll probably keep reading if only to see how we get from here to there.

Edit: I just had to add, in regards to the dad
There should be limits to how shitty a person can be. Like he essentially ruined the lives of everyone he’s ever met and we’re just supposed to get over that???

Maybe actually, she isn't someone from another world, but she just saw the future, or a possible future ?

I see a lot of people are confused about the setting so I'll try to help, even though I'm not a novel reader. The story references the economic bubble burst a lot, which is an event that happened in Japan in 1992. Basically, Japan's economy had been rising rapidly post-WWII, which inflation rose so high that it was like a imploded bubble. When it bursted, prices dropped and everything went to shit. You can imagine that plenty of companies lost their assets or bankrupted. Rei mentioned that her father lost his money when the bubble burst, then brought her to her grandmother after that, combining with her high-school age, I'd say this manga takes place in 2000s Japan. Although you can probably guess that already, since the manga shows smartphones being used widely among the rich kids, but not cheap enough that a poor person can afford.

Wow, the nostalgia hits hard -- recording songs on cassette tapes and worrying about them deteriorating due to frequent use was a thing not so long ago.

Alright I ship Reiko with Soujuu so that she can be with the twins forever. Also love how she's calling that girl a complete nutjob in such a nice and elegant way (which isn't far off)

Man, I'm a bit confused on the time, but I guess it can't be too long ago if there are smartphones?

This villainess story has a different flavor. It's neat.

....Reiko? I would like you to know something. Right now I'm sure there is a kid in a village in Africa.. feeling like they need to send your poor ass some money. I mean really..yeah people have it worse off in developing nations. But do you realize how freaking depressed they would probably be realizing in those "utopia" developed nations there are people living in the EXACT SAME CONDITIONS?!?! Shit that would horrify me... I mean at least when your in a developing nation it's not *in your face* about the shit you don't have. But she'd be dealing with it in and out every single day.... god no wonder she slips into delusions so frequently -.-
