@Akabane more threats will come in this story of course. But about it being because a creature that is a threat appeared, I think if a super deadly monster appeared in some forest in the middle ages they would mostly just avoid the area except for fame seekers. (Unless the forest is too close to a population center or some bigger street passes through it, or they think they could sell the monster parts for magical (viagra) potions. Or something else that makes a confrontation worthwhile.)
