In certain situations I get it but you realise a lot of the groups that snipe (especially when asking for donos) are not picking up said slack. Akatsuki have stayed within 2 or at most 3 chapters of what’s current and tend to catch up when they do release, they’ve been putting out the volume extras within the last week. Like what more would you want?
If we were in a 6 month plus wasteland like some series are then sure even someone asking for donos is acceptable since it’s keeping the series alive and might get someone who’s willing to spend a bit to catch up, this series just ain’t it. In that case you can push off someone who’s doing it for free at a pace they find comfortable to then have either go out of pocket yourself or wait until someone else does to get the same result, with a potentially lower quality product at the end.
I would never hard write off a snipe, unless it’s clear MTL garbage trying to redirect to a site just to make money or it’s a troll translation. This group and this situation are not the hill to die on for it. You were probably just trying to be an edgy contrarian though.
This group asking for donations, claiming they can do weekly when they've caught up with monthly manga and having a dodgy history is definitely black mark against them, when you speak about 2 chapters, they mean 3 months in this case, and while extras are very nice, they had only 7 pages with text to translate, mostly in Fine's extra. Though I guess those extras are still a sign that original group hasn't forgotten about manga.
If someone is releasing on clear and timely schedule, it would be pointless to interrupt them, unless maybe they're 30+ chapters behind and new team thinks they can actually catch up, but if we're talking about months, I don't see real problem here. And I've seen cases here when someone took up some manga after three months since last release, had some people bitch and moan about their supposed "snipe", almost gave up, but then ended up translating more chapters than the original team did. And I still remember those scanlators from years ago that threw a fit about something or other and deleted all their works here, so I really don't like the whole attitude of self-importance of scanlators and them "owning" series.
The people who really work hard and are responsible for bringing us the manga are the mangaka, so if someone snipes with MTL and popularizes worse pirated version of author's work than the original team did, that's something really shitty. Otherwise, we're all baddies in here anyway, unless we actually buy manga from Japanese websites like some folks do, and like some scanlators actually promote, sometimes even giving instructions for those who don't know Japanese.
