i would definitely prefer it if the story was that he is purposefully acting oblivious to her advances because his housing situation is dependent on her good will and love talk would potentially jeopardize it, because that is a perfectly reasonable argument to make, but it is not the case here. he genuinely isn't sure if she likes him or not, only that she is lying about the machines on purpose for some reason, which is definitely dense given her behavior
