I agree completely, but to at least be a bit fair the man is described as a warrior of great feats. Clearly he's dumb as a sack of fucking bricks, but too strong to just keel over when stabbed.
Honestly the assassin thing is so weirdly overdone, but I just try to ignore it as TENSIONNNN. Author clearly wants the cute wife segs, and stopped thinking about the rest of the plot for a bit.
you're right, in terms of being a bit more fair to his character and the portrayal thereof. Just one of those things where this isn't the first time assassins have come after him and/or Sitoen, and yet
this many just crashed the wedding party with one of them even seemingly successfully escaping.
I try not to take things as seriously or severely as I used to, but "old habits", and all that.
To your second point - assassins at least make sense in the context of the setting, insofar as the average person "understands" how medieval-style political military intrigue would go. I don't think it was quite so prevalent or "organized" when it came to IRL (in European history, anyway--I won't pretend I know the first thing about how it went over in Japan/East Asia), but assassins being an elite infiltration force that were trained and tasked with taking out specific targets is thematically appropriate.
I think it might feel overdone because we just have
so many stories set in these sorts of worlds, and the authors are all drawing from the same shared pool of tropes and ideas, for the most part.
But, what can you do.
