Not a colloquialism though. Just a contraction, unlike those two examples that are described as disapproved or nonstandard in some dictionaries.

Unless you assume Espiridion himself is mistaken, then it is just wrong, since he identified parts that he considers misinterpreted and then other ones that were based on them. If a thesis involving magic is anything like a scientific one (and lore suggests that is how this world's magic works), then a good part of it's argument simply doesn't hold up. This may or may not mean that the entire thing collapses, but even in the best case (as in, whatever she's proposing works) it's not correct (since it might work, but not for the reasons she thinks, which could spell catastrophy if applied in a different context/way). Your line is simply a thing professors say to limit discouraging students, Espiridion doesn't bother likely because she's not his pupil and it's honestly faster to just point out the flaws.
