I'm glad the general consensus is that Bona is a way better concubine candidate. Zenjiro's logic is very...him, but he doesn't seem to consider how she'd actually be quite content if she married him.

Girl just likes doing her work-hobby, and being attached to the Capuan family would absolve her of many fussy responsibilities getting in the way of that. Not to mention she gets to be up close with the cutting edge marble technology.

Freya jives quite well with Zenjiro as a potential wife for the exact same reason. He already provides her with everything she wants to be happy; in being himself, he happily allows his concubines to continue being themselves as a given.
Case in point: allowing her to confiscate the space-isolating barrier tool while on her ship. I bet Aura doesn't like that, but Zenjiro was able to see it from her point of view rather easily.
The primary reason Zenjiro believes she would be opposed is that Bona was originally a commoner - IE, someone from the same values system as him. Since Commoners don't have multiple spouses, it actually would be in Zenjirou's mind to be a point of unhappiness to force her into that role.

Actually, no, Lucrezia is not 'confirmed' anything, in fact the engagement planning is backburnered specifically to give more time for the issues Zenjirou sees as a problem to be worked out. They even went with a whole political excuse for doing so, which required disclosing the 'white empire' knowledge and the fact that the Lulled Sea given to Uppasala was a political trap.
"“Then in that case, should we assume that Lucretia becoming your concubine is just a matter of time?” she asked."
And
"“Her Majesty wants to have Lucretia as your concubine from a strategic perspective, and you want to avoid it but will accept it if the cost of not doing so is too great. If we were to combine everything you have both said, could we sum it up as you not being enthusiastic about the prospect, but that you’re indeed willing to marry her?” Freya asked, bluntly summarizing everything that had been said thus far.
“Yeah, I guess,” Zenjirou replied, unable to hide an awkward smile."

The only thing they are doing is delaying the marriage, it will still happen eventually. That's what being engaged means.

They have not declared an engagement. They have not had Zenjirou do anything that effectively makes it an engagement. Unlike Freya, whom essentially pushed Zenjirou into the declaration of an engagement, right after this section they turned around and pushed the whole affair further out by using Freya's family.

This is all still within the private talk level that could still fall apart. Why the writer is keeping it there, because he wants to throw a wrench into the works or otherwise, he's pushing the actual actions of the engagement to future books somewhere.

Wrong, Bona is 100 times better.
Zenjiro just needs to make the same offer Aura made to him.
If Bona marries Zen, she can simply spend her days relaxing in leasure while doing all the research she wants, bet she would jump on that in an instant.

Someone please spoil me on whether the little girl actually becomes a concubine, I'm really praying she doesn't.
I mean, it worked so well for him, right? 🙄
He got nothing of what he was promised...

literally the only obstacle left was zenjirou in this engagement. Lucrezia has this as her life's goal and has gone all in on it, the politics of the twin kingdoms revolves around this, Aura's future plans revolves around this, and in this conversation Zenjirou has given his consent to it and they are literally making plans based on the future with Lucrezia as his next concubine. Lucrezia has been informed to the effect of her being the next concubine and are arranging plans on her living conditions. Literally the only thing missing is an official announcement that they are engaged. Hence why I say they are basically engaged.

Freya, by the way as your own counter example, was never officially engaged with zenjirou. She only proposed, without permission from her father the king, whose permission is absolutely necessary for any marriage unless she elopes and gives up her status as a princess. When he went to her home country, they were hearing of this marriage for the first time, and half the entire volume is about proving himself to them so they give him permission for the marriage. The entire basis of Zenjirou's conflict with Uppasala stems from his surprise marriage request, and that they believe Zenjirou is the one proposing.
