I'm not accusing the politicians of anything in particular, though I do think it's absurd. We lack enough information about their point of view or the current wider situation to make any sweeping judgements.Aren't you being a bit harsh? From their point of view, it makes sense to be suspicious and cautious, even if they're going a bit overboard. Look at the facts:
What I am annoyed about is people pushing this as "realistic" or "depth". It's another conflict for the MC to effortlessly roll until proven otherwise. It's not "depth" for people who probably have no actually particular reason for this conflict or hope of victory to choose to fight it, nor is it "depth" to dunk on them heckin' evil conservative nobles. It's just another masturbatory thing isekai authors tend to do. Doesn't make it any less entertaining but it sure isn't deep until we get shown the depth. We're just desensitized by years of watching OP isekai protagonists effortlessly steam roll everything, so we find it hard to emphasize with anyone doubting it happening here.
I guess a Christian saint would forgive them.Is it wrong that I'm such a spiteful little bitch that if this happened to me I'd hold the fact that they so readily threatened my life against them forever
Lack of a better alternative, perhaps. It could be dangerous to stop worshipping a corrupt goddess and thus incur her wrath. So everything is the goddess's fault? Why are they still worshipping her
You said it yourself - the guys in charge might have their own agendas/presumptions/whatever that they will value more highly than the truth. The black flame itself might not be something that always tells the truth, after all, that's just the claim of the ability's owner and who knows how it really works. It might be possible to make it announce whatever conclusion you like, or it might just not be any kind of lie detector at all and simply manifest at the user's preference, while being validated only due to said user's social position - this is how "justice" worked under feudalism, after all. Even if it is for real and confirms the MC's innocence - who's to say that they won't simply announce that the demon king gave him the ability to subvert it?Nah, I get it. As annoying as it is, conservative idiots in charge is kinda just a natural fate for any sort of governing body. They trust their own common sense over the results in front of their eyes, and any facts they see can be twisted to suit their interpretations.
Just because you're leaders doesn't mean you're competent, and just because you're competent doesn't mean you can't have massive blind spots due to fear, personal agendas, and complacency.
All that said, a lie detector kinda makes this work out. They're basically begging him to just tell the truth and utterly destroy their common sense. I say Shachiku gives them one last chance with the following claims before telling them everything and letting their worlds collapse.
And if all that fails...well, they're literally asking for it. Break their understanding of reality as they know it.
- "I don't know how the other heroes were, but in my old world, we have a way of simulating our journey to take down the Demon King in this world and so I'm actually very well-versed in defeating the Elite Four and Demon King." No black flame.
- "To that end, the reason I immediately ran off is because I was trying to defeat one of them in a very narrow timeframe of opportunity" No black flame implicitly suggests it's referencing a vulnerbility in the Elite Four even when it's about frame-perfect speedrunning.
- "I am a spy." Black flame proving this claim false.
- "I have ill intentions for this world and/or kingdom." Black flame proves this claim false.
- "My goal is sincerely to defeat the Elite Four and Demon King so this world can be at peace."
- Optionally, "My methods are confusing and hard to explain in a way that you would understand. Everyone I explained them to suggested I not bother."
