Look back to the first chapter. He didn't understand what was going on and relied entirely on an official to go through the ceremony.

King gave him a giant pile of gold, men and resources, his job was to oversee the construction of a castle and setup a garrison. Since he's a general. That's his job. King thought he was a smart general instead of a brute force general and he didn't hold onto the money for even 5 minutes.

I'm sad to hear that this is all of this series we'll see from you! I hope that someone else picks it up since it's really, really good! But thanks for translating the first five chapters and bringing some attention to this fantastic series! :)

If they were actually on the up and up, he wouldn't have been dropped off in the middle of nowhere with no supplies or money. Even saying the king didn't know is a stretch, unless he was killed the moment Diaz left.

AUTHOR WTF WRITE A PROPER VILLAIN AND PLOT STORY

"hey i was told few days ago that this is my land now, i made this tent btw cozy isnt it". shes surprised and well she cant go back empty handed. "hero please lend us your strength for the upcoming war, ill be your wife or you can also pick from this 2 i brought, ofc we will also grant you remuneration" response is understandable

"i dont want to partake in war anymore"
the proper course to make her villain (more or less) is "yes we just assigned you as this land's lord but the situation has changed, so please" then the guards act scene.... followed by "is this an insubordination to royal decree ?" and with that you make her tattered pride as royal family the reason to oppose MC on her way back scene....

but instead
nO fUnDs nOr TrOoP ??, ThiS UsElEsS tRaSh.
the fuck ? logic and reasoning ? human behavior ? character development ?

I went back and read chapter 1 again. I don't believe that Diaz was given any reward beyond lordship over the fief. Or at least Diaz has no idea he was given any reward since this was all told from his perspective. Diaz is illiterate and didn't really understand everything that was happening during the audience with the king. If that is the case it would mean the government officials who were supervising/interpreting for Diaz conned him out of his rewards.

Ah, finally, an MC with balls.

For those complaining, think of this as Civilization set on... Deity mode, perhaps?

Hopefully will get more of this.

He wasn't retired. He was given a new job that he was really not qualified for. He literally didn't understand what was going on while the new task was described to him and he didn't ask any questions. They saw him leave in a caravan with the money and resources so it's understandable that people might find it weird that he's sitting alone in a tent in the middle of a field.

@IVVO It kinda got swept under the rug because it moved so fast past it, but she mentions being told he was given people and funds. "that's not what I heard". Which through a bit of extrapolation can mean she thinks he's lying to get out of providing such things and then mistreating her (which he technically did do, because even after being instructed in more proper etiquette he continued talking in the same manner with -san instead of -sama). Should she investigate further to see if her father's people really did just dump a national hero on the side of the road to die a dog's death? Something that as a military woman herself would likely seem inconceivable? Yeah, but hurt feelings gonna cloud her judgment. So yeah, it probably could have been handled better but it's not as bad as it looks at first glance.

Considering the information I think this war is a war of succession and that someone screwed over MC or she feels maybe he's not telling the truth but a quick look around squashes that argument but at the same time she must be refuting the fact that her father probably lied to her because he doesn't look like a bad king but the people that serve him most likely are behind how the MC ended like this and her not having anything to support her fight for secession and in turn blamed MC for this fuck up. Either way I can only guess I like these slow life mangas but this one is definitely above the rest hope to see more of this series in future thanks for the translation.

Fantastic series. I am glad they brought up the lack of support from the Kingdom.

The problem is that the story is told from Dias' perspective, he's illiterate and uneducated but with a reputation as a genius on the battlefield. The last part is unfortunate for the kingdom.

The princess along with the rest of the kingdom saw him leave with a wagon loaded full of gold from the kingdom's treasury. They were expecting a castle and town under construction since that's what the ceremony with the king was about. The princess and knights attended the ceremony so from their perspective, Dias ran off with the kingdoms' treasury and is committing treason (along with theft and possible rebellion since a thousand men and ton of gold doesn't just disappear). The sensed 'red' anger is about that, they think he's acting dumb because his reputation as an extremely competent fighter. She eventually does investigate what happened, the official at the ceremony was an agent of the prince, but by then it's much, much too late. She can't save her father or the kingdom. After this there's just roving war bands, slaver gangs and burned out villages in what was once a kingdom as the civil war spirals out of control, with a genocidal maniac who employs scorched earth tactics on one side and a princess untrained in war on the other. This doesn't affect Dias though since he's far from the wars, so it's slice of life. From his perspective, things turned out ok.
