in case you did not get it, dragons here are no humble creatures who desire peace. The dragon was just testing his wit with a riddle, to see how he answers.
The dragon will still fight against them no matter what he says though, because that's its nature, and that can't be changed from just talking.

Anw, every answers will lead to their demise either way, this answer just makes the dragon acknowledge them and allows them to actually fight against it like heroes.

Even with a scale knocked off and a missing eye, Valacirca is extremely huge. I have a hard time figuring out how they could win. He would certainly be the final boss of many other stories.
