This was supposed to be the reddit of Manga, batoto s successor, where you could upload your own stuff when you wanted, have viewers read on your own site and donate to fund projects, in reality it is both lawless and authoritarian, some rules are enforced and other ignored, some people get punished for something everyone else walks away from, it became far less about a community than just complaints and bad leadership

wasn't it always like this? sure, random people can upload your group's releases but if you don't want them to you can claim ownership of the group page/report it to staffs so it'll be locked and no one can upload there
you already can use delay function to encourage people to read on your own site, not like everyone wants to though, I sure am only using MD for my daily reads, I use madokami for other things
you're true that it kinda lawless, I view it that they use the same hands-off approach as Valve, only have (arguably some are vague) few rules and only step in in a case by case basis
I don't think there are rules that are ignored though, at least not that I know of

Lucky MD coz they didn't wait that long before they got traffic that is because most of the early chapters uploaded in here are ripped from the sites of the scanlation teams and good heart scan teams uploaded it. So basically scanlation gives traffic on MD first before MD gave traffic to scanlation sites.

IIRC MD at the earliest is just platform to release Doki's manga releases, which people then use to voluntarily upload chapters ripped(?) from batoto (and others) since there's no any other like batoto at that moment, and then MD keeps evolving to be like what it is now
and I don't think they really care about traffic other than to keep people away from other predatory aggregators, not like that they got paid (if what they said about donations only used for servers, and I do think they say the truth considering they rarely ask for donation and not a monthly thing)

Mangadex don't need to upload the works of the scan group which have their own site, IT STEALS reader views.

it's not MD who uploaded them though, most are volunteers and as I said above, groups can claim ownership and then locked so no one can upload. and then they can put their own site links on the group info page so people can go there, not that much different than MangaUpdates

It's a joke/dream/meme that Holo has/wants if the opportunity arises to go legit in which the site will able to keep most of the library when going legit, which holo also admitted it as A VERY LOW chance of happening or basically almost impossible to happen.

@Arashiyama It's Holo's distant and, frankly, unrealistic dream as an individual. A human can dream, right? Trump dreamed of ending the North Korean nuclear weapons problem, but in the end he couldn't do anything about it. Holo dreams of building a legal manga translation empire, but it would be even more difficult than Trump's dream. Furthermore, as has been said in this thread, if by some bizarre turn of events MD actually started to go down that road, it would basically mean the death of MD as we know it. The same as when Batoto died and disappeared. Legit MD couldn't use the current database of scanlations for anything, in fact they would be harmful for the legit MD as a legit site can't host illegal content. They would basically need to start from almost a scratch, depending on if they got some individual groups interested in turning pro as well, with the licenses MD managed to negotiate with Asian publishers. For 99% of scanlators and readers, it would simply mean that MD died and they would need to look for another place, just like happened when Batoto died. So, if you thought MD going legit means they would suddenly put all the scanlations behind a paywall, then no, that's not the case at all.

The fact the staff are using each group's Patreon as defence is annoying. Like, literally, it's not only that, but it's pretty much screaming "You should be doing this for free" from them.

Each group has a life. Each group has their own personal time to consider, and they're doing the scans and such for free. They ask for support so that it's not a constant bash on them if they're late, or if somethings not done. A money incentive to keep working is the thing. As Holo said:

To top it off, what do Scanlators gain from uploading to MD? From my own PoV it's only coming down to popularity should they be uploading a series that's popular. Otherwise, they'd be lucky to get anything other then exposure from MD at all.

I'd like to quickly counter this - groups without a website CAN get lots of exposure by uploading to MD, as others will rip it from here conveniently rather than some shady blog/imgur post. As stated in countless posts earlier, NO ONE is forced to use MD, and if you choose to use it, you should by all account accept some house rules, not to bend it to your likings using your own influence. That's rather childish

Saying this as a member of a group, I have put hours and hours of my life into helping scanlate manga

I have group members that do even more than me, twice or thrice that amount.

But we never asked for money because we don’t expect money. No one should go into scanlating manga unofficially if they plan on actually making money on their efforts. Go get a real job if you do, whether it be in localizing manga or otherwise. This is volunteering to give to a community, not a job.

Well that’s my 2¢. I’ve figured out at this point that people have different expectations of scanlation work, and whether they think it’s right for them to expect to get paid

You guys say they should, my group says they shouldn’t. I don’t think I’ve changed your minds but at least I’ve made it clear what a whole lot of other people think.
