I wonder. It could be that, or it could just be setup for the next arc (where we now have underlying knowledge of a new BBEG but only Chigarashi knows).
nah its clear this is the final arc. nemura sensei mystery resolved, dumbass guy who cant see ghosts arc resolved, tattoo guy friendship resolved, they basiclaly resolved all the mysteries set up in like 3 chapters

so this manga defo got axed right? seems like everything got super rushed suddenly.

monster of the week... monster of the week... monster of the week... introduce new mysterious character... monster of the week... suddenly 200km per hour in plot
I swear, every time I see speculation that a manga is headed towards an axe, it still gets updates four years later. Fact is that mangaka need time to plan out how a whole arc will play out, especially if it's an original manga that's not adapting someone else's story. That's where the fillers come in as it meets the biweekly deadline while also giving the mangaka time to fully plan out a large arc that's surely being set up.

Nimura wants to save the world. But to do so, he broke not just Makube, but Iruko and Kizaki as well. He wants the world free from the clutches of "The Principles". But has he ever considered he could do so without causing such pain to his students? That he didn't need to do any manipulations, and he could have been the quiet old mentor he seemed to be?

Well, Chiragashi also thinks so! But it seems she can't tell the trio what really happened. While the world outside saw amazing explosions of energy, Chirahashi saw the truth. And now she can't comprehend it. No wonder she'd rather drink alcohol.

Well, damn. So Prof. Nimura was the BBEG all along, huh. The mad professor. Well played. I think that helps Kizaki's bloody hands problem a bit, because this guy was pulling their strings all along, making them dance in the palm of his hand. Now I'm starting to think the 10 "unsolved" damage reports were in all likelihood manufactured by him.

We finally get a glimpse of the missing piece of the puzzle in Kaoru's memories. This lunatic tried to kill off his newly graduated former students and Kaoru's power (I saw those guys with the veils) almost finished him off.

I'm loving how Mahina is exactly the embodiment of the so-called "fool", of the common people that the crazy professor despises and here they face off in the final arc. Nimura thinks he's the man? Stick it to the man, then! Flipping the bird at the last boss? Mad lass. Heroine, even. Late story Mahina is so freaking awesome it's hard to believe she's the same girl people used to get mad over at the start.
