I think the spirit mage industry in that world is filled with so many scam artists that it is like well a lot of industries in this world. Oh I thought of a good example. Alchemists in the real world were the original Chemists, but they had very little understanding of their field, there were also a ton of people who claimed to be alchemists who created miracle cures, but they were pretty much snake oil salesmen, and their concoctions tended to be dangerous.

So the thinking of the guild is that any newbie claiming to be a spirit mage is either completely incompetent or a fraud.

You forgot to add that most people claiming to be spirit mages in the guild end up being incapable of demonstrating any power or perform any duty, and because of that some people have gotten hurt or scammed... repeatedly, for good while on that guild.

Remind me, what was the reason that we have to keep this super basic knowledge a secret from non-spirit mages? That you need a certain magic capacity to form a contract, which varies depending on the spirit?

Why are we monopolizing this knowledge? Wouldn't everyone be happier if spirit mages were not useless? Shouldn't this be taught as common knowledge to everyone, including non-spirit mages, so that it reaches everywhere?
