I think it's the opposite of saving energy, tbh. The reason Lilcarla shot him was because he couldn't keep up "in his current state", so unless she was just handicapping Noah further by killing his ride (which would be confusing given what she just said), I think she was really using her demon lord powers to inject him with a bunch of magic so he'd be able to evolve and chase after her better to waste less time. So the magic power seeping out wasn't his own power leaking, it was probably just the unstable power Lilcarla bestowed upon him being unable to be contained, which would explain Noah's chain not affecting it + the explosion at the end of the chap.

Entirely possible Pappy turns into a human anyway, but it seems a bit late in the game to pull the "now it's a human!" card. I'm guessing he'll just be a souped-up superdragon.
