I know of modern fire pistons, but I'm unsure if a partially wooden/bamboo(?) one could take the pressures necessary to spark? Contemporary ones are metal piston and sleeve.
Maybe there's a metal sleeve to match the piston in Shizuko's design?
Also, the fire piston is a demonstration of why re-entering space shuttles burn : it's because of the air compression and not the air friction like so many people tend to believe.
Fire pistons have been made out of purely bamboo before. Keep in mind that the technology for fire pistons is ancient, and many Southeast Asian cultures have made them without the use of metals.
