I like that they don't find relentless bullying cute and date the tsundere but this is also a bit more extreme than I want to see

Yeah I can see this as a reaction to that trend, as much as I like some of them... and there's a LOT of them by now. Uzaki, Nagatoro, Teasing Master Takagi, Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible. Tsunderes also count IMO, they'd be annoying to deal with in real life.

Funny thing about Nagatoro, she's pretty horrible in her original/pre-serialization version (but still obvious that she likes the MC) that she'd actually fit in THIS series.

Kubo is actually nice though, she's just the only girl that doesn't ignore the MC she doesn't bully him like the other series you mentioned

I'm just assuming she's continuing the same behavior as a way to cope, not that deep this time besides the immense guilt from doing something extremely foolish (she definitely wasn't in the right, but noone bothered to help when it got this bad, bystander effect is a bitch but that doesn't excuse the fact that the people around them also failed but once again it isn't that deep. Is just story.)
