Interesting... Based on the comments about how these types of soldiers historically would be killed off instead of captured, the reason their surrender was even accepted in the first place is probably due to how if the special task force, who were the only ones on the scene at the time, didn't they would now have to fight the 400 soldiers and would have sustained heavy casualties themselves as they are a relatively small unit. Accepting the surrender of these otherwise worthless prisoners would be a situation that probably didn't come up a lot, having 400 some commoners all surrender at once isn't a feat that can be accomplished without someone like Olivia to convince them that a guaranteed and unstoppable force of death and carnage is slowly chasing them.

Most prisoners were taken by the person who captured them with there rarely being a "state" effort. Each soldier would then on their own or through specialists demand a ransom from the family of the soldier. Some countries ofc had different methods and even forms of slavery - the most common fate of a pow - but in Christian world, no Christian could own another Christian, atleast on principle. This practice at times led to chaos, as people began to race to capture rich/noble looking soldiers and officers, as their families would be able to pay a lot more than the common peasant.
Other common faith was conscripted, the captured soldiers could just switch sides and fight for the winner. This was common during the so called mercenary era, tho barely practiced in Northern and Eastern Europe.
