Man I don't condone cheating at all but I can't help but feel sorry for her because based on their dynamic and the ending of the original story, it doesn't seem like she has a way out of her shitty relationship. I doubt Itsuki agreed to divorce.

What kind of help are you talking about here? I don't think I can trust someone that would choose cheating over divorce regardless

An abusive partner is already bad as is, there is no reason to become just as terrible as them by cheating when you can get a divorce on favourable terms.

... did you miss the entire preceding manga whose literal premise specifically hinged on how borderline impossible it is to get "a divorce on favourable terms" for these women?

Though, will we get something of an aftermath after the ending of the first story? Because Rio just disappeared...

Crap, Itsuki is a piece of crap, too. Still doesn't validate what Rio did. Should have just left and found someone new (who is not married).

The manga didn't mention any thing about cases where domestic abuse is involved.

If cheating is sufficient enough to secure favourable terms for divorce then there's no reason to think something as harmful as domestic abuse wouldn't be a sure guarantee

Would depend on what Japanese Law stipulates as 'domestic abuse' and whether it can be sufficiently proven to the court as clearing the bar to necessitate dissolving the marriage sans consent from Itsuki (in Rio's specific case).

Without knowing that, it becomes difficult to know Rio's chances of actually succeeding in removing herself from her marriage.

That's not to excuse what Rio did. But it's not even legally clear what recourse she had, realistically, to solve her core problem.

And there's the reality of emotional abuse and the feeling of futility. I don't know how this mini-series goes, but maybe Rio did try to find a way out, but couldn't do so in a manner that didn't amount to simply running away and giving up everything in her life.
That might have proven too high a cost for her, and so she remained trapped with no other avenue open to her, and the constant belittling of her personhood by Itsuki wore her down and made it difficult to talk about her burdens with others further compounding her feeling of isolation, and e eventuallyher building resentment toward the other three, and especially the (seemingly) happy marriage of Mahoro.

Hell, forget 'favorable terms', she could easily struggle getting terms that didn't see her penniless on the street, having had to give everything but the shirt* on her back to Itsuki because of the disparity of their station and public image.

If she can't prove the type of abuse the courts deemed "acceptable for reasons of divorce", then she either leaves with nothing, assuming Itsuki agrees at all, or she is stuck and potentially forced by the courts to remain in her marriage.

Chapter 11 (I think, maybe 12) of the original series had a brief overview of divorce law in Japan in a TL note at the end, and it is wildly illuminating even in its summarized form. Shit sucks over yonder in some ways.

This is another good point. As a few people pointed out in the second to last chapter of the main story, the point at which a DV survivor is most at risk is when they are making an attempt to leave. Itsuki is already controlling and, as we see in the main story, unapologetically physically abusive to Rio even in public and in front of witnesses - I genuinely do not want to imagine what might happen to her in a situation where she tried to divorce him only to be legally compelled to stay.

If you checked the previous comments you'd know that we werent talking about Rio

I don't get the idea that Rio even wants a divorce yet. She seems to like the advantages the marriage gives her too, it's just not fulfilling her like she thought.

In case you want this belief shaken, or just want to be irritated by the story lol

I read the entire thing. The cheating did not make things better, they should have just been honest with their partners and break it off sooner but they were too afraid of communicating. If you can't tell your partner when you felt a bit of a crush for someone else, that enough should be a flag that something is not right.

Not a bad manga and not criticizing you, but it is just not a story where something good happened because of cheating. XD

The usage of social media by the author both in this and the previous manga is pretty neat. Painted a problem with people nowadays chasing their ideals on social media and not realizing they’re built on many burdens and problems of itself. Mahoro and Rio both wanted the perfect life they thought the other has.

This is not to say you should put up with issues and pains because others have it too. But more of the same warning that FOMO and jealousy are one hell of a drug on social media. Behind the fantasy each person tries to sell is a mundane life with trauma and struggles of their own.

I cant think of any situation that could justify cheating on a faithful partner, not even domestic abuse because i'd expect it to be more than enough ground to get a favourable divorce. Still look toward to the story nonetheless
Agree, nothing can justify betrayal.

Imo it's fine if they get divorced first.
After divorce, all is fair play (as long as it's legal too ofc).

No worries. I am actually irritated by this manga. But I know there are people who are actually justifying or at least undermines the cheating because of the circumstances lol
