Author's note: TRUE!!!

Also, who thought that, "I WON!" :pacman: I mean, its most likely Rio because Rei is just going with the flow but that conversation makes it feel both ways.... The good thing about reading something like this is that you know how its going to end so I at least don't feel too frustrated about it. Its just a pure character exploration with no strings attached, unlike this affair.

I know this is focusing on Rio and the reasons she ended up where she did in the events of the main story.
But as two-faced and miserably jealous and damaged and awful as Rio is, as abusive and sociopath-adjacent as Itsuki is, and as futilely jealous and depressed as Kyouko was,

I cannot stand Rei and I truly think he was the worst of the bunch. Rio made terrible choices and shouldn't be forgiven for them, but I at least see the through-line of how she got from Point A to Point B, as dumb as it all really was.
Rei is .... just an asshole, thinks only with his dick, is lazy and conceited and egotistical, and I really can't wait for the Special Bonus Chapter that shows how Mahoro ended up with him.

I'm sure it's something as simple as "he was handsome and charming and she fell for him like all those stories", only to find out (too late) that there was nothing worthy of her behind his smile.

But Rei is the one that I'm happiest about "losing" at the end of the main series. Even more than his mother - she might have raised him and instilled the value(less) system he has, but he's still an adult who's responsible for his own choices and actions, and other children have broken away from bad parents before.
He has no excuses.

But, yes, Rio clearly "pushed herself onto" Rei, contrary to what she claimed at the anniversary party. I figured that was the case, but seeing it spelled out is still illuminating.

I W O N 👁️👄👁️.

Thank you for the translation (if you ask me, cute women are most likely to be sexy, but sexy women aren't always cute).

Rei back at home, googling "How to be a harem protagonist IRL".

Nah Rio is much worse. Rei barely has agency he just puts his dick in things. Rio got him drunk and seduced him to get one over on her friend, she's awful.
um excuse me. Did you not just see how Rio explained how it was Mahoro and Itsuki's fault she's boning down with Rei and his magical flesh flute in the cafe's store room?

She's such a bitch!
Even the little empathy I had for her is fading away.
They totally deserves what is coming for them.

I don't think there is a point in having a context about "who is the worst of the worst", but I agree with @UdenEmpati in that Rei is a textbook case of scumbag-ness. And as other people mentioned, it's funny that his friends and colleagues recognize him as self-serving and/or exploitative.

Confirmed, the dick wasn't that good, it was just the only one available
Rio has been asked out by some costumers already, and she is a dual-wielder, so she might have other instruments available. It's just that this one had the perk of serving suffering (or, in her point of view, "justice") to a close friend.

Back to Rei, he doesn't even care about the consequences of his actions. He just assumes he can get away with anything.

Now back to the question, who is worse? A malicious person with a clear intent, or a malicious person that doesn't even care? Pick your poison, I guess.

I'm not sure being a lazy asshole is worse than being an abusive sociopath.
I'm not convinced some part of Itsuki's deal isn't pathological in nature. If that's the case, there's a component of "nature versus nurture" at play, and if his neurochemistry is wired in that way, then it's a part of who he is to be such that's not wholly within his control.

He's still godawful and not a good person, but:

Rei has none of that even potentially-explanatory brain wiring to explain why he is the way he is. His choices are clearly his own, and even with his being raised by his mother, he is ostensibly wholly capable of choosing to be a better person than he is throughout this entire series.
Hence why I personally dislike him more than any other character.

I guess I can couch my initial statement in "for myself and my own perspectives", if you want to take issue with me making it a generalized statement that sounds like I'm speaking to some greater truth and not my own opinion.

I fully agree - I should amend my initial statement to reflect that it's purely my own take and not some objective truth or anything.
This isn't meant to be a game of "find the biggest piece of shit", and different people will approach each character with their own biases and viewpoints on who they find the most egregious example of behavior and mindset.

I just know that for me, Rei gets my goat in a way that few characters I've come across in a story have in recent memory.

You can't be serious? Its everyones fault other than her own. When someone goes down that line, it is almost always deflection. "I am not doing this because I want to, I was pushed to this." "I was made to do this."

Have agency when it benefits you but when it doesn't, you nothing more than a puppet and can't be held responsible for your actions.

As for the Rei, Rio argument, I say Rio is worse because she pretends to be anything other than an asshole. We all know Rei is an asshole. He's a pain to deal with but its pretty obvious what you are getting when dealing with someone like that. Rio is the usual "play both fields" and stick to which ever one benefits her. Ie trying to have the best of both worlds without any of the negatives and trying to remain "neutral" (yes when it was mentioned she was the neutral party in their group in college, red flags because there's a difference between one who has a middle of the road stance vs one who chooses a middle of the road stance to avoid confrontation)

In my theory of female attractiveness, it can usually be described in terms of varying degrees of cuteness, classiness and sexiness.
