I just wish the MC would learn the language now, I get why the mangaka doesn't want him too but it would be great if he did.
He's learned quite a bit so far. I'm guessing in another 10-15 chapters he'll be at a conversational level

I guess that's one of the main things in this manga, that the MC actually learns the language little by little through the interactions with his new friends and the appraisal from what's writen in that blackboard of his.
Just like when you start watching anime knowing nothing about japanese, but then, within time, you start to recognize some words and meanings just because you have listened to them several times over.
"I can use this! Public baths, sanitary 'wells' for the slums, maybe even if I am genius enough I can even install them in a tank towering above buildings to let gravity create running water for more sanitary toilets and overall easy access to water without having to expend immense effort and time! I can finally solve the unsolvable equation of lifting water high into the air (if only something I would nickname 'pumps' existed, to enable my dream of aqueducts spanning the entire city!!"
Nah, too obvious, and spanning 2 entire chapters. It will turn out to be a ruse where its subverted and he is actually a super good guy. And he was described as intelligent before, so he will have some super good welfare plan!
...I wish. Not like author proved to be competent enough for that, he even ended a prior chapter on a "cliffhanger", only to then retcon it and say a random dragon did it.

If I had to guess, the noble's son is going to commission him to make something that makes water and can be put inside of a water skin. He's created a very valuable product that travelers will want simply because it means a reliable source of water. The town desperately needs a local specialty to get outside trade going again after losing the vast majority of its adventurers

I am hoping the "evil grin" is just bait and the son is not just evil noble part deux. He could just be seeing the knife for what it is. In a medieval society something that could magically produce clean water would be a huge game changer.
