I'm getting the feeling from this chapter and the previous one that Eugene bought that ring for Cecil, but that "fiancée" stole it and showed it to Cecil saying it was for her. 🤔

Heh.
We'll see Lady Grace, we'll see.

Anyways, I sure hope misunderstanding resolves in time. I have a feeling they both think the other one betrayed them.
However, I do think she got a short end of the stick, so the prince should be very careful about how he approaches her.

@Lioness94
@AngelDante :
Made this spoiler before but here's a quick run down.
The long story short is that Eugene's butler secretly set things up for both of them to break up.

To Cecil he made that showing that Eugene no longer wanted to see her and show off the 'fiancee'
While to Eugene, he first kept him busy by begging for him to stay with his father until he passed.
Eugene accepted and wrote letters to keep contact with Cecil.
But over time 'Cecil' just outright told him she's in love with someone else.

When Eugene went back, all the villagers just repeated the same story, that Cecil went off elsewhere to marry.

In the end Eugene just adopted a kid and have him be his heir, never married anyone.

I think it's in ch 6? So not that far from here.

Also, it's totally implied that Grace's father, the Duke, is actually that butler reincarnated similar to how these two reincarnated in this time.
Which would totally explain Grace's 'people should stay with those of the same status' BS teaching.

EDIT: Went to check the RAW
Confirmed that Grace's father is the butler, Cecil even got a vision about it and now Keefa plan to investigate him.

The butler's motivation was apparently the 'I wanted my master to marry 'appropriate' person' same BS he teach his daughter.

And turn out Grace is indeed a bitch (unlike a different Gracie who's totally a sis)
When Liz's seed that's turned into flower suddenly wilted, the high priest evacuated everyone.
Bitch be like "you're saying everyone here passed, even Liz whose flower wilted?"
High Priest went "Well, the flower = person thing was a lie y'see, but as for the flower wilting...that's actually a pass"
Then he showed that now Liz's tree has a FRUIT growing.

So the bitch's plan, trick one of her minions into burning the tree.
Though said minion girl (the 'leader' of the 3 stooges here) had a change of heart at the end.

It’s so fucking obvious Eugene did nothing wrong.
I feel bad for him especially, his gf kills herself because some rando tells her a blatant lie

I need to see this misunderstanding cleared up... NOW (jk, that's the only plot device this novel has going for it, they're gonna milk it for all it's worth)

Anyway, thanks for the chapter! Fun series to read and the chapters are long

ok but if all three including the butler ended up coincidentally reincarnating in the same time period and come in contact with each other again and she ends up with the prince at the end, then I don’t see why it was necessary... besides why is the priest such a prevalent character as well? It feels like this story is gonna be her and the prince reconciling and getting together in the end after taking down the evil butler because of “fate” or something like that. Well that’s just my opinion and if it is that type is story I’ll probably just drop it

So first comes a slander attempt? Wonder how many failures it will take before the first attempted assassination?

Iirc the misunderstanding is cleared up by the end of WN arc 1. The rest is about Liz navigating the saint competition while looking out for the evil butler's attempts to slander/disgrace her by any means possible.

Is it just me, or do all the staff at the place look like identical clones or something? Like the gardeners, the cafeteria staff, etc.

dunno about gods and what not in this world but from what I've seen thus far, the sage at least is looking for someone who will actually do well by the people rather than someone who just wants the authority of the position as the first test seems designed to weed out the entitled arrogant b!tches. so between Ms Grace and MC I'd say these a clear disparity in odds of progressing in the selection in the latter's favor

Uhm?

I don't remember how I came home
In my despair, I suffered from a cold
And then
My life ended at only eighteen years

So, I guess you're interpreting that as her having discovered her superpower of controlling murderous rhinoviruses just before her death? 🙄

@Xeredge Were the previous Saints in this universe pretentious pricks? I ask because those girls have a vision of how a Saint is supposed to act.

The upper class in any society in history tends to have rather inflated self-valuation. Starting with the original Howard heiress back in the first chapter, this universe seems to be making a point of that aspect being heavily emphasized in this kingdom's culture. Then again, that's not out of place for a medieval setting where, as with certain other historical cultures, the nobility was deemed favored by gods and superior to the common class. (Otherwise, how could they have been born into nobility? I mean, just think about it, you stupid commoner! Clearly the heavens meant for them to be better than you, whose bloodline is only worthy of crawling around in the dirt. I mean, not like noble families came from commoners at some point or another, or anything like that. Blasphemy of that sort will get your head cut off, by the way. Tsk. Well, there ARE upstart nobility, however. Clearly they're not worthy of their titles, inferior as they are.) The issue here is just inherent priviledge and the expectation that roles are intended for prestige and political power, and are bestowed based on one's inherent merit (that is to say, their lineage and connections) rather than their character.

I doubt they're really putting much thought into the actual spiritual purpose of the Saint role at all. In fact, we saw that with the family that tried to interfere with our protagonist at the start, despite the fact that it was made clear that it's common knowledge that interfering with a saint candidate can cause the downfall of one's house. Obviously, their decisions were made from a certain self-indulgently reckless frame of mind. Unfortunately, it's one I can attest to being extremely common in real life, as well, so it's not as absurd- okay, well, it's exactly as absurd as it seems, but it's not necessarily unlikely, either. Rather, in real life, there's usually not such convenient laws in place to punish individuals for behaving in such a manner.. or, at least, not ones that you're likely to benefit from if you're in a lower socio-economic class. Then again, given that our MC was only "saved" by the intervention of her assigned priest, who can be deemed to be upper class, we can say that's fairly similar in this narrative, as well.

Well, it's not necessarily that lower class people are less likely to behave in an irrational or arrogant manner, it's that they haven't had their ego stroked or impulses indulged as much, or have so much power on hand to abuse. Generally, a large percentage of the population avoids trouble due to concern over punishment (via laws), but certain social castes (eg, the rich, police [in certain countries], etc) tend to be more prone to believing they're above such restraints. Combine all those factors, and you get the stereotypical upper class behavior (regardless of whether their position is considered upper class or not).

People die from colds because they want to.
Do you think it’s a coincidence that Japan has some of the highest suicide rates and also people often drop dead from the sniffles?
