@Trombe In theory, if your genes are 100% perfect, incest isn't a problem. The problem is that genes mutate and most mutations are negative especially if you put genes with the same mutations together. You can't get sickle cell or cystic fibrosis if the defective genes simply don't exist, and incest doesn't increase the rate of DNA mutation in the children. The nature of recessive genes is why incest is bad from a scientific point of view. If the first man and woman had perfect genes, incest wouldn't have been an issue for at least a few generations though it would depend a lot on the mutation rate and what percent of those mutations are debilitating.

Incest doubles your odds of something bad happening genetically. But if you have only a 0.1% chance of something bad happening to your kids then you only get a 0.2%. Do that a few generations and it gets real bad real fast, but just once is basically like having an x-ray recently.

As other people said - incest in one generation doesn't mean kids will be "defective" or such.

Problems are with generations of incestual relationships, either in straight (though twisted) line like between first cousins or "branches" (i.e. some fucked up "my dad/mom is also my kid's parent" or even further down the line, as certain VN series has demonstrated in the past).

Also, eloping would've been a terrible idea. They're minors, and as such their parents are legally responsible for them until they're both over 20 (or 21? not sure if that's still age of majority or just for drinking alcohol). If they ran away they would be without any money, home to stay at or stability.
