While I understand the DMCA hitting licensed series this massive hit screws over people who are in other countries from those licensed, the smaller series that will never be officially licensed outside of Japan, and of course anyone in current financial situations that buying manga is not feasible.
I try to buy manga when I can but I consume way more than I can afford and so many of the series I have read or current read have not seen the light of day beyond mangadex (and I assume aggregator sites). Not to mention now I am sure a lot of scanlation teams are gonna be looking at this and consider whether or not they should even bother continuing because it sucks working on a project for months, or years even, for it all to just be erased with no warning.

I bought some Manga, not as much as I'd want because of money problems, but what I bought was incentivized by this website and this community.

Don't they understand I could still read those, I can go on a lot of other aggregator website that won't respond to any DMCA request, but here was special, I care about this community, the scanlators, is a great source for staying updated through community effort on new or old Manga.
There are many stories that now I will likely forget about it, and I won't be talking about anymore and thus they will get less publicity.

So much for asking my doc to lower my brain pill dosage, this is the worst news since 9/11.

I'm someone that would buy a series too when I enjoyed it and when I could afford it. I know it's cliche to say this but a move like this will reduce my spending and ultimately take me out of the hobby completely. There's just so much value being lost here and it's sad. All the time and energy spent scanlating and the discussions, all gone. How many series are going to just vanish completely because they won't get official releases? It's all just so spiteful.

Mods deleted my comment for some reason so I'll reiterate; it's pretty clear that this site is transitioning towards becoming a NamiComi mirror. It's very telling how you can't filter out titles from the staff picks (some of which are from NamiComi) and the self published titles (all of which are from NamiComi lol). I think every scan group here should consider migrating off this site and explore alternatives. No point in uploading our chapters here if they're just gonna get deleted.

What happened today at MD will continue, no matter what we do or say. I hate to say this, because I've been here for years as a group leader and avid reader, but now it will either be a slow countdown or a sudden explosion at any moment. All sides of this situation are understandable, but now it's time to pick up the pieces and reorganize. The truth is, we group leaders will have to look for places to make the works we translate available, whether in online readers or for dl, and readers will have to look for places to read them, whether in friendly places or not.

A brazilian website just announced that more than 700 titles were impacted and it will increase. And the chances of many of these things becoming lost media are very high.

Welp, this is the same song and dance that happened to literally all the aggregators in the past. Onemanga, Mangafox, Batoto, and now Mangadex. Nothing new learned, same road walked and all ending up with the same issues that literally every pirate site eventually faces, DMCAs (or equivalents).

Even if some site does come along that can survive DMCAs, what does it matter if people just congregate to some other site that will literally face the same issues down the line? I don't have much hope that people will learn that this time either.

Then you're completely disregarding facts. Have you noticed that people are boycotting K-manga because they think it's too expensive, and that people expect at most to pay $2 a month for a subscription like on viz or mangaplus, even though shueisha and viz are obviously losing money on having such a low price? You can make excuses all you want, but the issue these days are not a service problem, it's that people don't want to pay and basically expect to get manga for free.
I won't pay to rent chapters. Period.

I have no problem buying volumes, and (in theory) I wouldn't mind a sub that lets me read stuff indefinitely as long as I have the sub. But buy coins to unlock chapters for a week places can fuck right off.

Exactly this. The amount of manga, manhwa and manhua available to read might as well be infinite and they want me to buy unlocks per chapter for only a single work that's from a small pool of all available works? I read hundreds of series which regularly get forgotten, dropped or finished, I'm never going to support that kind of monetization. I don't care a single bit what is sustainable or not, that's their issue, not mine.

For those who want to know the extent, the claimers, etc, they also reported it all to Google (so the URLs are removed), so Lumen have it all.

https://lumendatabase.org/notices/search?sort_by=date_received+desc&term=mangadex

One of the biggest players seem to be this one (https://comeso.org/) on behalf of a lot of people
That faq section on comeso is absolutely ridiculously condescending. This does confirm that most of the big publishing companies both japanese and korean use a third party for dmca. Probably explains why it is so heavy-handed as well as they probably would have an even less nuanced view considering their business model.
