I just don't see how this site survives this. It was a one-stop location for lots of uploaders, and users, and now many users completely lost the data of what manga they were reading and what chapter they were on, unless they tracked it via other sites like Manga-Updates etc. Just seems like it's going to slowly wither away and die as people realize that putting your manga-reading eggs in one basket is just a recipe for pain later on.

It doesn't. That copyright FAQ all but confirms the site's finished I think. More takedowns to come that haven't been processed, uploads are forbidden unless you have explicit permission, the site's got new owners that will want to legitimize it, etc.

Probably won't be long before we see a complete wipe and some new business model emerge. NamiComi will want to capitalize on the pageviews before everyone migrates.

"We will continue working on the features that make MangaDex great, to make it an even better platform for content creators."

"Content creators"

Tell me all series will be removed without telling me all series will be removed.

Yup, Mangadex is officially dead.
I mean, Batoto died before this, someone else will come along and carry the torch forward again I'm sure.

IMPORTANT SUGGESTION TO EVERYONE

Now that it's clear Mangadex is passing to new owners who want to focus on "content creators", anyone who wants to copy their subscriptions should do it immediately, cause I doubt we'll have all series listed for long even if all chapters are removed.

Mark my words, this site will keep no information of series at all, our hopes of the site becoming a possible community hub and alternative to mangaupdates and mal just won't happen.

I know I'll work on my spreadsheet all day tomorrow to get all my 3.5k subscriptions cause I won't be surprised if the site as we know don't last even a fucking week.

Time for Mangadex2. Gonna miss the HQ uploads. Scrapers almost always compress shit or ruin the img with artefacts.
Isn't this technically already Mangadex 2.0?
Originally was Batoto
It died
Mangadex is successor
Went down for some months
Now we have Mangadex 2.0
Which just died

Hopefully next one will be smart enough to host somewhere where they can ignore dmca.

Trying to be the "good guys" who are different from the eeeeevil manga sites full of ads is the reason it's dying after all.

It's because they tried to monetize this site.
Mangadex succeeded for as long as it did despite the people running it, not because of them, and the damage they've done to their own creation by attempting to "go legit" has finally culminated in it garnering too much attention.

I'll be honest, since when Mangadex tried to monetize? As far as I know Mangadex don't really make any money, it's why every other month they're begging for donations

Did you miss the intermittent ads, partnerships with other sites, the drive to get themselves to the top of Google's search results, and the time they were "hacked" (returned a rented server without wiping their credentials, so the next guy who plugged it in loaded up this site with admin controls) which revealed they were sitting on a stash of bitcoins?

Yes? Lol

I knew there was some shit with NamiComi but that was it.

Hope successor isn't as dumb and just make the site full of ads while hosted in a hellhole like all others who ignore dmca.

It is totally legit for publishers to fight piracy or - to give it a better name - unauthorized translations. That doesnˋt mean it makes sense to do this. First, why would they do this? Just take a look at how big manga (and LN) has gotten. You can find more and more titles (and more and more obscure ones) on Amazon and official sites/apps. That triggers the understandable wish to kill of any unauthorized competition to make as much money as you can. Second, why now to this extent? Because AI can do it for you nearly for free. Third, does it make sense? Yes. And no. Some might argue it is absolutely necessary, behause official translations only work if there is money to be made. It would be plain stupid to allow anyone to give away content for free that you payed for, invested money to translate. But - would Manga have gotten this big without unauthorized translations, and will it stay this big? I donˋt think so. Spending money on two or three big titles wonˋt be a thing for a lot of readers. But on several dozens of dubious quality? Not a lot of people will do. What publishers forget is why Manga series get big. In the years pre-bato/Mangadex I bought 2 series, Gunsmith Cats and Battle Angel Alita (me being a franco-belgian comic afficionado). But since I bought more than a dozen complete series including long running titles like Vinland Saga, Frieren or Goblin Slayer - and with the only exception of Goblin Slayer I bought them because I read them on bato or Mangadex first, realized they are great and worth buying. Without these I wouldn‘t have bought them. And I don‘t think I‘m the only one. In theory, every Manga read on Mangadex is a Manga not sold by the publisher. But in reality this is not true. Mangadex & co. are free advertising and the best waay to get new authors known to tge public. DMCAing the big names that sell automatically is the right thing to do, but DMCAing smaller, less known titles is plain stupid and will kill of a lot of potential hits. Lets be honest, who would have bought a title like Frieren or Apothecary Diaries (pre Anime) just from taking a look at the synopsis on Amazon?

@Poliorketes
The funny thing is that it looks like it's not even really the Japanese publishers who did it, but Kakao, which is a Korean publisher.

Apparently they've been attacking scanlation groups for months now, so the signs that this might happen were there.

The signs were fucking there, but either we were blind to them if you didn't know about it or ignored it if you did.

I still blame Mangadex more for probably being hosted in a place where they have no choice but to obey dmca.

It's like stealing merchandise and sell it in front of the store from where you stole :wtf:
