@Adsfer Sure, we all knew it wouldn't break limits he didn't have, but it still makes sense that he would try it. I mean, he's still not really sure why his mysterious power works the way it does, what the gates are, what the monsters are, etc. He's been trying to investigate the truth this whole time, so of course he's going to want to learn more about "a power that defies the common sense of this world".
Especially since this means other people have been able to increase their power, which affects his strategic mindset. If he blindly assumed that getting stronger was a random thing that pretty much never happens, he could get tripped up later on. But now he has proof that some people are powered up intentionally, and that means he can't let his guard down.
