What needs to change here is people's thinking, not the rating system.
While I generally agree, changing people takes time and huge changes of society and would counteract to the last decades of Enshittification, which is not an easy task.
Having a rating system that requires attention and mental engagement to use would at least filter and also encourage more involved thought by a little bit.

After some time I had personally come to the conclusion that, it isn't really fair for me to give series a 1-10 rating scale because, over the years, I've discovered series that are so much better or so much worse than series I have previously given high praise or excessively low ratings. Since I am not about to go and re-adjust all of the ratings I had previously made, I had decided to adhere to a strict policy of only rating things with either 1, 5, or 10. A rating of 10 being something I had personally enjoyed. A rating of 5 being something that I consider to just be okay, mediocre even, but it was at least able to keep my attention but not something I would be willing to pay for or support. A 1 being either, so unbelievably boring that I couldn't continue reading it, so unbelievably stupid that my suspension of disbelief couldn't hold on any longer, or it managed to truly infuriate me.
I prefer the 1-5 system to 1-10 myself, because 1-5 makes more intuitive sense. For example, 5 is very good, 4 is mostly good / generally worth watching, 3 is more good than bad but mediocre or generic to most viewers, 2 is most should skip but some may enjoy, 1 you wonder how it got made in the first place.

On a 1-10 scale, no one is really going to agree about the difference between a 6, a 7, and an 8. It's only valuable if you have a particular reviewer you like, because then you can learn how they grade reviews. Then their reviews help you even if they have different criteria than you.

However, 1-5 is more granularity than most people have. For aggregate reviews, there's mostly no reason to choose anything other than 1 or 10. That's why like/dislike or thumbs up / thumbs down is becoming the more common rating system and why 3 is a failing grade for an uber driver. People mostly know if they felt positively or negatively about something and then move on.

10 or 1 also gives you the most ability to shift the average toward what you believe is correct. If, in the 2024 presidential election, you could vote between 1-10, where 10 is Trump and 1 is Kamala harris and whoever the number rounds to wins, why would you choose anything besides 1 or 10? You have no reason to choose a 6 or a 4, even if that's a more accurate statement of your preferences.

At the end of the day all scores are biased and it's been a long time since they weren't misinformative on the whole Internet, thumps up and down would be more simple but people like numbers more than words. Giving a ten to yuri is the only way to counter ill-given ones just because of the genre. Not like this is anything new coming from me, like yuri is justice, but skimming is a must skill for an adult.
