Also, someone on Reddit expressed (joking?) confusion about “famires” (“ファミレス”). Yes, it's an abbreviation of ”family restaurant” (“ファミリーレストラン”). Japanese short forms often don't work in English, but in this case I thought it did. At least, I thought it was the best option. One alternative is turning it into an initialism, something we do more in English, but I thought “famires” worked better than “FR”. In some cases, simply using the full word (“family restaurant”) may work, but I only want to do that when use of the full Japanese word is rare, but use of “ファミリーレストラン” is not rare, so the full “family restaurant” just isn't defensible to me.

I'd argue that the best translation to English would be "diner" which is the American equivalent establishment type.

It becomes an obvious translation when you consider that the chain Denny's is common in both the US and Japan, and it's called a Diner in the US and a Family Restaurant in Japan, despite being essentially the exact same establishment with minor menu variations.

Yes being domesticational was another option I didn't mention. I prefer the foreignizational path in this case (and generally), but “diner” isn't terrible. Altho, “ダイナー” is definitely a used word, so again something to consider. And to be more specific, just because Denny's is a “diner” in the US and a “family restaurant” in Japan, and the categories are compareable, that doesn't mean that that's a good translation. I don't agree that American and Japanese categorical frameworks can necessarily be treated as interchangeable. The fact that they consider it a family restaurant is lost if you go with “diner” over “famires”. Tho this is a very foreignizational perspective.
