I honestly thought that was gonna be the end goal! She'd eventually explain why she takes on a cat form, opens up, and they fall in love. But now it's just really awkward without any of that context...

I'm actually pissed off at an ending for the first time in a long while.

So, the overall feeling is basically like the end of a Volume 1 rather than the end of the series. From the sound of it, the author had plans of continuing it until they didn't and this is the result. I'm alright with it because I imagine it as not the end of a story, but just a continuing one- even if it never does.
